Hello SVMUG members and friends,

After almost two decades, the term "Rickroll" has been added to the English language, at least in American English, as described in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. The term is among 1,400 new words added to the dictionary this week.

The first Rickroll link was posted on May 15, 2007, on 4chan’s video game board (/v/). A user named Shawn Cotter (handle cotter548) orchestrated the prank. At the time, anticipation for the newly announced Grand Theft Auto IV was so intense that Rockstar Games’ servers crashed while serving the first trailer. Cotter capitalized on the traffic by posting a link masquerading as an alternate mirror to the GTA IV trailer, which instead redirected unsuspecting users to a YouTube upload of Rick Astley’s 1987 music video for "Never Gonna Give You Up".

The rest of its history has become legend.

Trivia: the Rickroll evolved from "duckrolling," where a deceptive link took web browsers to a picture of a wooden duck on wheels.

Here are some additional new words and terms.

Looksmaxxing
parasocial
meme coin
promposal
copium
trash panda
Mandela Effect
[Odd, I seem to remember the Mandela Effect being added years ago.]
