replaceChild and parseXML/LoadXML in IE8

Has anyone had any succss using these in IE8.
Every time I do a getElementById to find the node to replace SVGWeb
returns it as an HTMLDiv element. Then SVGWeb rejects the call because
the .nodeType is incorrect.
