Jawahar Knowledge Center(JKC), is a conceptual program launched by IEG(Institute for Electronic Governance), a division of AP Govt, for the purpose of training over 2700 Final year B.Tech students who were selected for different MNCs through the program Campus Placement Mission(CPM), from the state of Andhra Pradesh.
The overall concept of JKC is very good. Infact IEG's innovative idea was first of its kind to my knowledge in the country. Thanks to IEG.
A lot of tie ups were made with few foreign universities and MNCs to train the students pursuing the JKC training at various host colleges(about 75 of them), distributed throughout the state.
But, there are facts that IEG has to accept. To be frank JKC training to the student knowledge is a flop show. Nothing is planned! and if planned it is not properly implemented.
Placing 8-10 mentors(trainers for the trainees) for 40-45 students is indeed a good idea. But what is the use, when their responsibilities are properly coined? All colleges are not one and the same. Few students enjoyed a lot at some JKCs and few suffered a lot.
Foundation Program(FP) from INFOSYS, a brilliant idea. But it too was not implemented properly, due non qualified Mentors deployed and few like HOD's of college didnt find time to spend with. Many of the JKCs just MANAGED this program for money. It would have been better if we had qualified mentor batch was deployed to teach FP, fully dedicated for us. (Atleast 1 such mentor would have been sufficient)
Online training by IBM & Microsoft through Mana Tv was innovative. But the clarity of Mana Tv was worse and the television & its sound system at the colleges made it even more worse with echoing effects. about 40 students infront of 1 single 21 Inch TV!! Who will be able to watch. Its very frustrating to watch it.
The DOTNET examination (online one), was the worst ever website designed (to my knowledge). When the site is refreshed, the timer would be reset and the questions would be the same. Few browsers had problem with loading the Javascript and executing them and also the navigation was worst. Few were unable to view the submit button to complete the examination. And while writing the exam if there was a power failure and no backup? Unable to login as you have already submitted. And finally there was no certificate provided even the student had written the examination well.
Hostel facilities were below average, with heavy costs.
Holidays where not given and too prolonged hours of work made it very difficult for us to stay in the labs in those boiling labs (ACs were not provided). The chairs provided were the cause for back pains for many students.
At CPRS training, few students didnt even respect ladies! And when complained non took action despite warned the JKC students itself!! This is a shame and pitiable situation.
At few colleges, students were woke up early in the morning and forced to study, just like Junior Colleges!
The JKC project titles were worst ever. First, they were not live projects and this fact reduced the spirit of the student to work hard. JKC students became laughing stock infront of other students who managed up with good projects and internships in many reputed companies. JKC projects was a just like a suspense and thriller movie with much hype built as if LIVE PROJECTS and all of which were implemented previously. If not all, atleast few students could have earned handsomely during this 6 month period.
The total cost of training spent by the student was
1. 2000 as CPM fee.
2. 8000 as JKC fee.
3. 23000 as Cost of Offer Letter.
4. 5000 to parent college.
5. 10500 paid as hostel fees.
6. 12000 as Misc. expenses over a 6 month period.
7. 6 Month period of TIME!
Which sums upto 60000 + valuable TIME.
What the student has gained:
1.6000 as stipend to date.
2. Offer Letter.
Note: The 54000 spent is just more than the amount we spent for our engineering fees for two years.
Proper man power planning was not done as the mentors ratio was high. They had no work at all when the JKC students were involved in academic work. They could be deployed for a better purpose during that time.
Stipends were not provided in time. Though the reasons could be several, it affected the planning of the student. Also these non paid stipends were made the source for black mailing the students, by IEG. Students suffered a lot in want of pocket money as the hostels were worse.
Atlast, there was a certificate given that the student has taken part in JKC for a period of six months. Now what is the use of a certificate that is not universally recognised? Is JKC a AICTE recognised program? Is JKC an internationally or atleast nationally recognised program? Nothing. No course was documented in the certificate, that the student possesed at the completion of the course. It would have been better if that certificate had details such as the Courses/Skills learnt or gained.
Few students were still not provided with the offer letters which led to the delay in disposal of the releiving orders from JKC colleges and further non issual of other certificates to them unless the student has paid the 1/12 th of the annual salary (though he didnt yet receive the offer letter).
Finally we request IEG to give feedback on JKCs, to students, about what it feels and what it beleives the students have achieved through JKCs or its certificates.
Atleast let our feedback help the next year's JKC students.
