• According to winter storm warnings and a flood warning from the National Weather Service, Siskiyou County is expected to experience high winds, heavy rains and mountain snows over the next few days.

• The Siskiyou County Information Forum advises for residents to stay alert to the radio, television and local newspapers for storm updates. is a multi agency team in support of emergency service throughout Siskiyou County.
  

  Local public works agencies are providing sand bags free of charge for anyone who needs them.

  The Forum provides the following winter safety tips:
  

  • If using an alternative heat source during a power outage, remember that carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels burn incompletely. Make sure your home is equipped with a carbon monoxide detector with battery backup. During or after a snowstorm make sure you check your dryer, stove, furnace and fire place vents to clear snow build up.  Generator, gas or propane heaters need to be placed in a well ventilated location outdoors away from windows, doors and vent openings. Gas or charcoal grills can produce CO- use only outside.
  

  • When traveling, make sure someone knows your destination and arrival time. Avoid traveling near streams or creeks that have a potential for flooding. If you must drive in a flooded area don't try to drive across a flooded road as the water may be much deeper than you except. Do not walk through fast moving water, as little as six inches of water can make you fall or possibly drown. Winter storms they often produce high winds. Be aware of down power lines and other falling objects and debris.

  PREPAREDNESS TIP:  Don't drive unless necessary during heavy rains, especially if it may not be cleared by your wipers. Wipers on, headlights on:  It's the law.  Remember that mud can be very slick, and even at slow speed, may reduce your control of the vehicle.
