Take Action on National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day
As you get your family and property ready for hurricane season, don’t forget to include your pets in your disaster preparedness plans. Tomorrow, May 8, 2013, is National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day and provides the perfect opportunity to take some time to create or update preparedness plans for your pets.
Stay ahead of hurricane season with these preparedness tips for your pets:
- Ensure your pet is wearing a collar and identification, which are visible and up-to-date at all times. Be sure to include your cell phone number on your pet’s tag.
- Make a basic disaster kit with enough dry food and water for each pet to last at least five days, with medications and medical records stored in a waterproof container and garbage bags to collect pets’ waste.
- Have sturdy leashes, harnesses and carriers to transport pets safely.

Learning from Superstorm Sandy Champions of Change
Last month, the White House honored five New Jersey residents and organizations as “Champions of Change” for their exceptional response and recovery efforts following Superstorm Sandy.
The five honorees from New Jersey represented a variety of organizations including the media, educational scholarships, fund-raising apparel, athletic events and financial assistance. “In every disaster there are always individuals who come forward to do extraordinary things,” said Gracia Szczech, Federal Coordinating Officer of the disaster operation in New Jersey.
In all, the program recognized 17 unsung heroes from across the nation for their efforts in implementing innovative, collaborative solutions to meet the unique needs of communities and neighborhoods, as they worked to rebuild after the devastating effects of this disaster.
