The latest word from The Vermont Department of Public Services is that
FairPoint has abandoned its negations with Verizon. FP now plans to
run the connection to Stamford from Brattleboro instead of from
Bennington. My guess is that they are doing this to avoid stepping on
Verizon's toes in MA.

This sounds like a good plan. Would have been a better plan several
months ago. I have no idea how long it will take, but will let you
know as soon as find out.

It's been roughly a year now since we made our first request for a T1.

In the mean time Bob, Alan, CJ, and I spend most of last Monday trying
to install a repeater at Blake's house on Allen's peak (eventual site
of the new T1). CJand Al are still working on some problems we
encountered. Once we get it running, it should provide service for
some members who have none. Who and how many these are remains a
question that requires further testing.

For mysewlf, I am now capable of programming radios, and thus of doing
simple installations. In many cases, however, I will need help from
someone fond of roofs. I am not.

Volunteers are always welcome in this all-volunteer cooperative.

They charged Sovernet some kind of re-ordering charge. Verizon had assured CJ last year that the the original order would not lapse, but that change3dwith the handoff.

I would be amazed if they had the gall to change the price after almost a year of delay.

We are at work trying to put a repeater on Allen's hill as a stop-gap. Alan and CJ have hit some sort of problem with this installation, but I am sure they will solve it soon.

Our critical problem right now is bandwidth. We are running out. I'll discuss that in my next email to members.

Best,

Peter
