I have fiddled with the group settings, and now all members should
have access to the site.

Goggle Groups is still experimental, and it obviously has some bugs.

Let me know directly if you have further problems.

Peter,
Bob Briggs mentioned the possibility of a different antenna to try at our
house. Not sure how that would happen or if even an option. I have been
keeping track of our reliability on getting on line and it is dismal. I
cannot continue to participate when I can not do something as simple as read
E-mail or even get to my online bank accounts which has caused us some undue
headaches. We do not game or download movies living up to the continued
admonishment of the band width issues.
If we cannot resolve the intermittent ability of the system I am afraid we
will have to suspend our participation with the co-op.
Please advise as to what direction we should look.
Thanks for doing all you do to try and continue to make our community a
continued success.
Ken

Dear Ken,

I am sorry about your trouble with reception.  But thanks for giving me the chance to try to explain some of this to the entire group.

On at least three occasions recently, a crash or slowdown has been the fault of Sovernet, our internet provider, and not the fault of SVBC,  The cooperative's own network has been remarkably reliable for most members. Occasionally we need to redo settings; once a member used up all the bandwidth without knowing it  (CJ, as usual, to the rescue). Twice electricans cut all power to the school, where our root transmitter resides.

What's been happening recently, experienced by many members of the cooperative as a dramatic slow-down in speed, could be largely due to the huge increase in demand ooccasioned by a growing population of members and, more recently, by summer vacation for students. In other words, right now we have too many members for too little bandwidth.

We are on the verge of solving that problem. I am now in fighter-plane mode, harrassing both Sovernet and Fair Point to get a move on and string the wire we need for the new T1. Fair Point has, in my humble one, been dogging it a bit.

When the new T1 is up, bandwidth will nearly triple. The network should be faster and stronger. Then we can add new users and start planning for an even more pervasive transmission.

That doesn't mean that the problems that individuals might have with their own equipment will vanish. But problems with routers and computers are not the cooperative's responsibility, although we try to help, in a neighborly and unofficial way, when we can.  But I need to stress this. The cooperative has no responsibility once the signal gets to the radio. Any problems after that are not our fault.

It's also good to remember that the cooperative was created and now is run by a handful of volunteers. I know that you have volunteered yourself, and we are grateful for that.

Thanks for being so sensitive to the communal welfare by not doing heavy downloads (games, movies) during hours when other users need the speed for work or education. You set a good example for all of us.

Bob will get a copy of this, and I hope we'll be able to improve your installation.

Thanks,

Peter
