After 20 years on my 05, I have had only one issue with my radiator where a repair has done the job that lasted 15 of those years.  I see signs of a small leak and instead of repairing again,  I'm inclined to replace.  I see lots of replacement options, but sadly I also see a lot of complaints about fitment (and sometimes quality).  It appears there are differences in the radiator fitment and connections between years and the sources do not seem to understand based on what they advertise.  Does anyone here in this long time (and knowledgeable) group know of a reliable radiator source that will fit my 05?  Any suggestions here are greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing you'll want to replace the hoses as well. I'm about to purchase a set of Samco silicone ones. They make them in several colors.

I have no suggestions but just want to express my delight in hearing about the SV you've kept going for twenty years. You probably need new tires.

Hi, Steven!  Good to see your name pop up here.  I didn't think about the hoses, but you make a good point.  I guess one thing leads to another, especially when you're looking at 20+ years.  Thanks for the reminder and tip on a source.

Well, when I had to replace mine on my ‘04 due to an unfortunate encounter with a bus (clipped the back bumper of the bus, bent the radiator, no damage to me except a bruised ego), I got a used one from a crashed ‘06. As an added bonus, it didn’t stick out as far as the stock one for my ‘04.  No issues with cooling either.

Don,
Thanks for your thoughts.  "Blue" is my first love and I intend to keep it.  My Tacoma ("Taco") truck is a year older and I intend to keep that too.  I share in your delight that includes this esteemed group who was instrumental in providing me SV insights and knowledge when I began riding (I was a late bloomer compared to the rest of you).  Lots of helpful mods along the way as a result.
Appreciate your sharing,
Leslie

Hi, Sean,
That tells me there were differences between the 04 and later years.  As a result, I will avoid that year because I do prefer the appearance as you described.
Thanks,
Leslie

So nice to know that there are some of us old farts still above ground...I think the joy that riding my Hondas and Suzukis has helped me make it to 88. I don't ride anymore, left leg is too weak to hold up a bike but I watch MotoGP as a compensation. And, I drive through the esses like I was still on a bike.

Leslie:

There was.  2003 was the first year of the redesign (different frame, fuel injected instead of carbureted), and 2004 carried a lot of these differences as well.  Looks like 1 was the radiator - the 2003 (and, I'm guessing, 2004) had the 1st gen SV650 radiator while later bikes had the new radiator.

I'd stick to the newer radiator, personally - just as efficient, and smaller.

Everyone:

Little bit of news on the bike front - I now own a 2000 Ducati ST4.  Going from the "poor man's Ducati" to the real thing.  Keeping the SV, though, because I can't bring myself to sell it and my wife keeps making noises about getting her license...

Sean

PS:  I guess this is the annual post to make sure everyone on the list is still awake.  😉

Sean,

Thanks for the confirmation on the difference in radiators between the years.  I am looking and fortunately the leak is not (yet) serious, so my sense of urgency is low at this time.  I just like looking ahead instead of rushing.  Besides, it's still fun to think about upgrading, seeing the options, and then getting distracted with the shiny farkles along the way.  I do intend to keep "Blue" (I know how the color of our SV's make a difference) forever.

Since we are talking about our other motos, I still have my 98 Honda Magna with approx. 40k miles.  It's a 750 V4 with carbs and it's running great.  I'm thinking of selling it (not sure how much $$ I can get) while it is running well and avoid the next maintenance cycle (for some reason, I have less time for tinkering during retirement; go figure).  And, while I can still ride, it would be nice to upgrade to a more modern cruiser with ABS and traction control features (of course anything 'new' will have fuel injection) to keep me honest.  I'm considering a Kawasaki Vulcan (either the 650 or 900).  Low maintenance and safety being the priority here; any thoughts and suggestions from this esteemed (and experienced) group are welcomed.

See?  I may have started another conversation and I didn't even mention tires or oil!

Cheers,
Leslie (aka, Bluepepper)

A hardy HELLO to all. Fred here in OR, but now down a little south in 'Truck-by' (Canby) OR. Really nice to find some words from the past. Amazing this group still exists.

Hello to Bluepepper:  Still in Houston? Staying warm? I'm long past SV-ing. Bye bye blue '01 and silver '03, sniff, sniff. Still riding at 80 years young though, on a '15 CB500F. Loving it but needing to adjust to the higher revving. Gotta love that V-Four smooth torque, eh Leslie? At least I did until my '94 VFR gave me problems. I know that familiar refrain about retirement and time - "how did I ever get anything done while working full time?"

Hello to Sean:  Lovin the Duck? Probably. Neighbor has a Duck Monster and a blown 30's roadster. If I hear a roar and the ground shakes, it's the black roadster idling. If it's just a booming roar, he's riding off on the Duck. That's my Gearhead Gary.

And HELLO to all the others of you I neglected to mention. Rubber side down, OK?  😇

Hi, Fred!  So nice to hear from you here.  I still talk about my amazing visit to OR and the hospitality you extended to me with a great riding tour that included McMinnville.  Still riding here in Houston; just not as often as I should be able to do nowadays.  Stay safe out there...

Thanks for posting these pics.  Been to COTA most years, but recently lost interest in making that 'investment' of time and money after Rossi retired.  I see his team is represented now, so it has peaked my interest.  Regardless, it's a great track and I even attended a Formula 1 race there.

Thanks for the pics. You get a different perspective from an attendee's point of view than from TV. That place is huge.
