Hope everyone is well. After sitting in my garage ever since I moved from Florida to Illinois 7 years ago, I’ve finally started the project to revive my 2000 SV (just in time for winter here lol). I’ve got a new air and oil filter on hand, and a factory fuel petcock on order that is taking forever to get here. Hopefully that’s all I’ll need. I might have to do a carb rebuild and fuel pump if the petcock doesn’t solve the fuel flow issue. Lots of spider web removal was in order too.

It’s been so long that I’ve forgotten which version of Shell Rotella oil we all used to use that gave us good results without clutch slippage. I seem to recall 10w-40 diesel synthetic without the energy saving star symbol on the bottle (which I can’t find now). Does anyone recall?

Let’s do a roll call to see who’s still around from the old days. I was 44 yrs old I think when I joined this group’s predecessor (sv650.org) in 2000 and then Jim Stewart and Beth Mills migrated some users over to this gmail email list after site administration ended there. My SV is now 23 yrs old and I still have and it’s in decent shape other than the fuel system parts that clogged with residue. Reply back if you’re still here.

And … apologies for starting another oil thread lol.

Hey Steve, still here in South Dakota. Use Rotella 15w40 T4 for dino or 5w40 or 15w40 T6 if you want synthetic. I think I have been with the group since 03? Still got my 01 SV650S candy red and my 03 GSXR600.  The SV hasn't been rode in a couple of years due to back issues the past couple of years. Had a ruptured disc last year that needed surgery. But I did get the GSXR out this summer.
Glad to see I'm not the only one still getting group emails.

Still on the list but I just passed 87 yrs on Halloween and had to stop riding a few years ago as my left hip was getting too arthritic to allow me to support my Strom. In case time has erased some memories I had a major getoff in 04 on my 02 SV and after a period of recovery and wife convincing I got back on a 650 V Strom in 06. Wound up selling that to a neighbor when in became clear I was not in full control with a weak left leg. Glad to see the oil thread is alive and kicking (and me too). Before having to sell the Strom it took me on a few very nice rides to eastern Orygun and the Olympic Peninsula in the company of my long time touring buddy.

Ya know what you call a conversation among a group of old farts?....an organ recital.

Cheers from Podunk Orygun

Steve:

Still here, still have my '04 SVN. Going to be giving her to my wife
for her use, actually - she's taking the course soon, hopefully.

As for oil... I use Castrol motorcycle-specific semi-synthetic oil.
70,000+ km and she still runs well, so it's either a testament to
Japanese engineering or the oil. Or both.

I've been here almost as long as I've owned my SV - stumbled across it
when I was looking for advice on something, so I've been here since '05
or so. 36 then, 54 now. Been through a few other bikes since then ('85
VF1000F, '03 XB9R, currently have a '00 K1200RS and '00 ST4) but keep
coming back to the SV...

It’s great to hear from everyone. I don’t remember what flavour of Rotella worked. Maybe Google would help.

I’m still up in Quebec. No bike. Everything in Canada is stupid expensive.

I turned 50 this year. My health has taken a bit of a turn. High blood pressure and some mild kidney problems, etc. Booooooo.

A trip on the time machine back to the early 2000s!

I've owned three SVs over the years. A 2003 650S, a 2005 1000S, and a 2006 650N. Haven't had one in six years or more.

Yep,  after 50 you just have to keep patching the leaks. Carry on!

I stopped riding after two knee surgeries made it pretty hard to properly control a bike. I gave my SV away two years ago to my kids’ school teacher who was in need of a ride.

Jim and Beth - Miss you too the most!!!

Hey Jim, keep that attitude positive...remember, ageing ain't for the faint hearted. My motto is I ache therefore I am.... (still breathing and above ground)....From my viewpoint you're just a youngster anyway as I've got you by six years.

I made a series of GoPro videos with a camera mounted on my helmet so I can go back now and then and relive some pleasant memories...Hurricane Ridge, Sauvie Island, Germantown Road. I turn up the sound, all that's missing is a fan on my desk giving me the windblown experience.

Hi, Steve,

It's been quite a while since I have been active here, so I'm glad to see your message pop up in my email to remind me about this esteemed group.

I still have my Blue 05 SV and it's been idle for the longest period of time since I have owned it.  I had shoulder replacement surgery over the summer and put a trickle charger on Ol' Blue.  I will be starting it up between the holidays and testing out my new hardware (in my shoulder).  I had some trauma to my nerves that affected my hand, so I am hesitant until I know I can operate my right hand adequately for throttle and brake.

So that no oil thread goes unanswered, I have stuck with Mobil1 for all my vehicles (two motorcycles, SUV, car, truck).  I changed the timing belt and valve cover gaskets in my truck and found that everything was super clean on the internals, so I'm pleased with the results.  I know it's expensive, but I plan ahead with sales, coupons, store specials, etc. and stock up in advance.  I also changed the core threads for the SV's oil filter so that I'm not stuck with 'Suzuki' specific oil filters.  It allows me to use a high end Purolator oil filter that is a bit longer.

Thanks for jumping in and getting me thinking about riding again,
Bluepepper

Yep same here, can’t open the pics. I’ll have to make a new acct.

It great to see all these riders/friends from the old days are still here.

I’ll be 68 in January. Broke my shoulder a couple of years ago and its finally back to normal minus some flexibility. It took forever to rebuild the strength, I had to start weightlifting to get it back. I couldn’t even lift a full gallon of milk off the top shelf at first, or even put on a jacket without major pain. Daily meds for high cholesterol and triglycerides but other than that I’m still good enough to ride I think. I’ll find out soon enough once I get the bike running and a day with rideable weather. The bike has a virtually brand new set of Michelin Pilot Powers that are 7 years old now, hope they stick lol. Hopefully I can make it as long Don and Jim have. Very glad to hear you guys are still around! Everyone else too.

Woah! Jim sighting! Great to see you! I've been wondering how you've been doing. And also Beth, and Ravi, and hello everyone else, too! So glad I decided to check this email account.

I finally sold my wife's 2002 SV last year to a college girl looking to start riding.  I still have my 2004 SV race bike that hasn't been started since the end of the 2007 season, when child #2 was about to arrive and mortgage payments began. I've been planning on converting the race bike to street duty but always had too many projects in front of it and could never get the lighting worked out. But now with LEDs it should be much easier to do.

Many bikes have come and gone, but I still have the Triumph I used to ride with the SVs :-)

Great to see everyone.

Back on topic, I still use Castrol ActEvo semisynthetic blend, 10W40.

Still here. People probably won't remember me, I never posted much. Still have my 2000 naked. Needs some wiring work. Had both his replaced in 2017-2018, so had to slow down during rehab. Hips feel almost as good as new now, and no pain!
