Bon Jour Ya'll; anyone left out there? Steve from Tampa here. Now that the weathers cold (60 F three days in a row) I thought I'd do some work to the forks of my '06 650. I'll be changing the oil and seals, rebuilding the front calipers, and painting the fork legs black. I was also thinking about putting gaiters on the tubes. The forks are 41MM and the space from the lower triple clamp to the top of the legs is 135mm. Thing is, I have no clue how to do this; do I get 41mm gaiters that are 135mm long? Do I get them longer? Do I get 41mm diameter or do I need to get something bigger so they don't bind? Anyone out there do this before? I seem to only be able to find 205mm and longer in my search so far. There are lots of gaiters out there in the $15 to 30 range. I noticed several OEM [for other bikes] $50 and over. Can anyone recommend companies to avoid of seek out?

60F is cold? Try here in Nova Scotia where that’s a nice spring or fall day… that’s riding weather!

Seriously, though, glad you made it through Ian OK.

As for gaiters and paint… wouldn’t the paint come off easily? I think the forks are aluminum (correct me if I’m wrong), so might powdercoating be the better alternative?

Sean, still with the 04 SVN that needs head bearings and a front tire…

A blast from the past. This was the best SV group. Steve from Lakewood, IL (was S. FL). No idea on the gaiters but thought I’d say hello back.

Haven't the foggiest as I haven't worked on a bike since I sold my 06 V Strom when the bum leg I acquired when I wadded my SV just wouldn't support the bike. I have some old GoPro videos that I shot on rides to remind me about all the fun and travels I did on the DL650. Glad to know there are some of you out there from the good old days. Shall we start an oil thread to revive the site??

Alas, I've no idea where my SV eventually ended up or if it's still running. I do have the FJR, but I'm pretty sure I put more miles on it moving it around the garage than actually riding anywhere.

Good to see the familiar names though!

My old (02) SV was sold to a couple who turned it into a track bike. The damage I did was, in many ways cosmetic but there were parts that needed replacing. The last I saw of it was as it faded into the distance on the bed of a trailer. About two years later my wife said she was tired of hearing me whimper whenever I got close to a motorcycle and told me to go get a new one, but not a "sportbike" like my old SV. Thus I entered into the genre of adventure-tourer and got an 06 WeeStrom, a very capable tourer and rather sporty in its own right. I wound up selling off all my riding gear through an outfit in Texas though I still have a rather scuffed up pair of leather pants hanging in my closet. Before I started riding again I sent my Shoei helmet to the factory and they tested it to see if it was still OK and they sent it back telling me that aside from the cosmetic damage it was good to go...good service for a good product as I got my chimes rung when I crashed and it took a lickin and kept on tickin...

Hey all,

I’m still without a bike. Still in Montréal. Maybe one day I’ll get another.

I don’t know where my SV or DRZ are. Hopefully, they’re being loved.

I heard something on Reddit that Suzuki is dropping the SV/DL engine and switching to a parallel twin. Boooo.

I had a GS450T Parallel twin and it couldn't pull a wet gumdrop out of a baby's mouth.

Heyas! I'm still in the Santa Cruz mtns. And still an  SV in the family, ridden mostly by my wife. Alongside a triumph, Harley & a ktm. And I still ride a few times a week, but I wish it was more. I still do "the meat ride" route which was introduced to me by this list. 💙

I had a GS450E.  Not a bad bike for what it was.  Would be a great commuter.  I suspect the 250-300cc beginner bikes are faster and get better gas mileage but the comfort of the GS would win.

I no longer have a SV, I sold it to a friend after his garage full of bikes burned down.  It was replaced by a 2018 T120 Bonneville.

ODE to SVS 650

It’s good to see from some old time SV group names.

I posted about 3 years ago that I bought a Monster 1200S
This year I added a Road King * (what an anachronism)
I used all 3 of them this season (recreational riding is only good for 6-8 months here in Vancouver, B.C.)

Guess which one I like the best ?

     Still riding 60 year later.
