Hey, it’s been a long time since I heard anything from the group. I’m getting ready to get my SV back into riding condition now that we might have some days above from freezing finally. Anyone still out there?

Hey Steve,

I lurk, but I'm in the same position.  My SV needs some TLC to get it back on the road, but my son and I are keen to make a go of it this Spring.

Still here too. I thought maybe the group had died off or something. Subzero temps last week. Just got done riding the snowmobile last weekend, in a nasty snow storm. Got 3 inches of rain Wednesday, then snow and 50- 60mph winds Thursday and now there saying 50 to 60 degrees this coming week. Mother nature just hit menopause!!!!

I’m still here. Thought about trading the SV in, but I just couldn’t... I’ve had it since 2006 and it’s a part of me. I got a 2000 BMW K1200RS last year, but I still can’t see getting rid of the SV...

63,000 km and counting.

I haven’t been active on the list for many years but I’m still out here. My 2000 SV is still in the garage. She has some front brake issues that need to be worked out. Should be back on the road soon. The Triumph sees more miles these days but I still love that little bike.

Hey all, the other Steve here (mccorpsman) . I still have Scarlett (red SV650, 2016), I keep her with a sister. St Louis and surroundings is a better place for her abilities. Flat and straight in Florida. She has 75,000 miles on her. A high pressure fuel pump , K&N filters, Barnett clutch. I have a reverse cone megaphone two into one into two stacked one atop the other Italian style fantasy I hope to fulfill one day.

Good to know you guys are still out there. I lurk tho my riding days are over and have been for the past couple of years, I sold my trusty Strom to my neighbor and shortly after that his son circled the US with his wife as a passenger. The leg I broke back in 04 just could no longer support the bike. I'm going to be 83 in October so my riding days were coming to an end as my reflexes were going south.I video'd some of my rides with my GoPro so now I relive my rides on my PC with the sound up and a fan blowing in my face.

Still here, and just getting out of a fairly snowy winter in New England. The SV’s spent the time in the garage, and I need to get mine back into riding condition as well. Shouldn’t be too bad - I need brake pads at both ends, and the right fork tube was starting to leak a bit toward the end of last year, so I’m going to have to address that. Looking forward to getting back to it, though - hopefully by April. We’ve got some decent riding weather for a few days right now, but for months it’s been too cold to get any of this needed work done, so I’m not ready yet.

I still ride my wife's 2001 SV sometimes since she never gets a chance to ride anymore. Took it on a great long weekend trip last memorial day. My 2004 race bike has been parked since I retired road racing in 2007.  Too many upgrades to ever get my money back so I still dream of getting it on the road. LED lighting may finally be to the point where I can finish that up.

Thanks,

Nice to see so many people still on the list.

I had to quit riding seven or eight years ago - the ol' back rebelled. I
really miss riding but the back isn't going to get better so I'm done.

I should sell the bikes but I can't bring myself to do it.

Absolutely, Steve A.  I still have my Blue 05 SV650.  I got started on the SV and this forum was my life line to all my questions and modifications.  After upgrading to a Power Commander, Woodcraft rearsets, Leo Vince titanium exhaust, Puig windscreen, Race Tech suspension, Sargent seat, and other minor farkles, I want to ride it forever.  I have also acquired a 98 Honda Magna along the way, so I alternate all year 'round (one of the benefits of living in the Southern regions).  I just got back from riding the hills in Texas Hill Country for Spring Break (taking my kids and now my grandkids, but still get a ride in to enjoy the countryside).  I wondered about the lack of activity here in the listserv, so I was pleased to see someone write and get responses.  It's good to see the familiar names pop up.  I sure am grateful to the members of this listserv who got me started on my love for SV's.

I still own and ride (seldom) my 2001 SV650S that I bought new 18 years ago. It’s the carbureted version with a lot of accessories for sport touring and track days. I only have ~60K miles on it because it hasn’t been my main ride for the last 12 years.    I own 3 other bikes, all of them are newer, not necessarily better. When I do get to ride it, it always brings a smile to my face.

Everything is so damn expensive up here - gas, groceries, taxes, vehicles, insurance. When I was in Ontario, the insurance was mind blowingly more expensive. In Quebec, the insurance isn't as bad but registration is expensive. Parts/tires are way more expensive. I'm realizing how spoiled I was in the States. It's definitely not impossible to own a bike here, just more expensive. Also, Corrie and I bought a house 2 years ago and my old 2008 Corolla is getting long in the tooth and shredded by what Quebec claims are roads so we need to replace it soon so I'm a bit skint in the funds department. That's funny, one of my co-workers (who also rides an SV) has his Ducati 125 GP bike sitting on his fireplace mantle. We keep asking him if he took the gas out.

Sadly, I sold my '02 a few years back to a co-worker in a 'before-it-was-famous' KonMari moment. I know he's still getting use out of it though. I'm down to an FJR and a Ural (which I'm also looking to clear out).

I see clean first gens listed for $2000-$3000 pretty regularly. I think $3000 is a stretch but who knows. I’ll probably put mine up for $2500 and see what happens.

My local dealer offered $600 in trade on a Yamaha MT-09. So, take that for what it’s worth.

Make sure you shop around for insurance, my car insurance company wanted $800.00 for 3 bikes (no tickets) and I had a quote for $350.00 from Progressive then ended up paying just under $300.00 per year for 3 bikes.  (1 vintage with minimum coverage plus theft, 2 modern with everything covered). The car insurance company as competitive on the cars, but not on bikes.

Nah, 3. ;)

Seriously, though, I’m usually on the bikes from late April-early May until November. Heated gear certainly helps.

Gas is $1.18/liter hereabouts. Regulated, so at least we know when we’re about to be screwed...

Parrsboro’s a nice area. If you have time, drive the Cabot Trail. You won’t be disappointed, but you will wish that you had a bike.

Sounds like your season is about the same as ours. There's a kid at my office who rides a CBR650 who'll push it to early December some years.

I had heated grips and a heated vest for the winters when I was in the US. They helped so much!

I think gas is regulated here too because they announce it on the radio daily.

Is the part of "free health care" that nobody talks about?

My bike insurance is cheap ($280 for four bikes, no comprehensive or
collision, but high liability) our gas is cheap ($2.30/gal?), tires
are cheap (ish), registration is cheap ($30/year for a car, $25 for a
bike) property taxes are capped at 2.5%, but healgh insurance is
stupid expensive.

What's the bit I'm missing? Are there other state benefits we don't
hear about much, like state pension that isn't useless, or highly
subsidized college education, or public primary schools that are
awesome, or fantastic public art....

My undergrad degree (BComm) was from Dalhousie University here in NS - $1,700/year.  My law degree (same university) was around $3,000/year.  Out of country students paid more, but it was still cheap as compared to the US.  I was able to make tuition with scholarships (I used to be smart, then I went to law school) and working summers at the local electric utility in the IT department.  My son doesn’t have a chance to do so, unfortunately.  So I’m going into debt paying for his tuition…  Ah well.

I’m inclined to agree that we still come out ahead, even in this crazy ass province. Everything is a little special here in Québec. We do get taxed pretty heavily (most in North America I think) and it is really annoying on one hand after living in Texas where taxes are very low. OTOH, those taxes go to things like healthcare, low cost tuition for university (UQAM, McGill, Concordia) and CEGEP (think Québec community college.) We have pharmacare, which means that if you don’t have a private drug plan you can pay into a provincial plan that helps quite a bit. Canadian drug prices aren’t as mind blowing as the US but they’re still high. Childcare is $7 a day if you make under a certain threshold and really reasonable otherwise.

I’ve had some heath problems since I moved up here and have spent time (3 weeks) in the hospital in 2015. There was zero cost to me. Currently, I have cellulitis on my leg from a nasty wipe out on the ice that’s not healing like it should so I’ve been to the walk-in a few times with no cost, other than meds.

I’m paying into QPP. We’ll see how that works out.

So, going back to my original complaint, the cost of living is higher up here. Depending on the province, owning a bike is more expensive than, say, in California. New homeowner thing ain’t helping finances. Right now, no moto for me.

I do miss cheaper gas and groceries and I miss Target and Trader Joe’s like nobody’s business.

Quebec is special, like Beth said. Taxes are higher there, but more things are provided by the government (subsidized daycare, pharmacare, etc.) And there’s the whole French thing...

All in all, I’d rather live in Canada. But as a Canadian citizen, I might be slightly biased. ;)

No worries.  Just drop me a line if you’d like to borrow it.  I know what it’s like to be unable to ride after my incident a couple of years ago on my Buell (which has been traded for the K1200RS, much to my wife’s relief).

Are there aspects of the way the US does things that you think would
be an improvement on the way Canada does them?

Not like, "I want cheap Trader Joe's brand name yogurt at rock bottom
prices!" but more like, "Canada's policy on XXX has the unintended
effect of YYY that the US way doesn't, we might be better off adopting
a version of US policy."

I've thought for a long time that some sort of socialized health care
in the US would be a huge boon, not just for poor people, but for
business who would no longer have to pay for or manage health plans,
and for the economy as a whole because nobody would be tied to a job
they hate just for the health coverage. Just imagine if companies
could hire anyone they wanted without having to think about paying for
their healthcare!

I was surprised to hear about the other high costs that appear to
reduce (one example person's) quality of life. Clearly that's not all
associated with healthcare, there's other stuff going on.

Good question. To be honest, a lot of Canadian policies and such are already based on US policies. Like a past Prime Minister said, living next to the US is like sleeping with an elephant - you feel every little twitch. We’ve actually had to put cultural policies in place to avoid being swamped by the US. But as far as alliances and such goes, we followed the US lead (until recently, but that’s a whole other story).

I think the differences really lie in societal norms. The US tends to celebrate the rugged individual who goes it alone - the individual is paramount. In Canada, we tend to take a more collective view - what’s good for the individual might not be good for the community as a whole. A good example is our constitutions - the US talks about “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Canada? “Peace, order and good government.”

What's the bit I'm missing?  Are there other state benefits we don't
hear about much, like state pension that isn't useless, or highly
subsidized college education, or public primary schools that are
awesome, or fantastic public art....

Still here. Haven't ridden in a couple of years, though. I stopped because of arthritis in my hips, but I've had both hips replaced and now I'm planning to get the SV ready to take advantage of our long California riding season.

I lived in England for 9 years. In my mind if England and the USA he’d a baby, it would be Canada. I could see myself spending a summer there, or maybe more, like two weeks.

Milktree,
My touring buddy and I spent a week in Sept. of 98 touring Vancouver Island and it only clouded over and rained one night maybe that was the week long summer but I've seen worse here in Portland that time of year. Also the Canadians were baseball fans so we got to watch Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire slug it out one night in a hotel bar on Quadra Island while dining on sockeye salmon and quaffing Moosehead Beer. Beautiful country, lovely people, well maintined ferries where as riders we were first on and first off.
