Hey peeps,

I’m going to do some low light shooting at a party in a few week with my old Canon 30D. I don’t think the wimpy built in flash will cut it. I’m looking at various used flashes from Canon, Metz, and Sigma. Anyone have any recommendations?

In other news, there appear to be ZERO 1-gen naked SVs in my neck Canada. Tons of S models, though. WTF???

I shoot with a Canon 430ex II. Plenty of power and the ETTL works great with my 6D. Though I have no experience with the 30D.

IIRC, Canada only got the S for a couple of years while we only got the naked south o’ the border. I have a blue naked 2000 that needs a good home but I don’t know if you’d want to deal with getting it across the border. I guess it would also depend on which part of Canada you’re in. I’m on the east coast.

I’m in Montréal. I don’t know how awesome it will be to to import a bike into the great taxation nation of Quebec. X-D But I’ll keep it in mind because I’m wanting one again.

My old SV was a fast blue 00 as well.

Thanks for the tip on a flash. I’ve seen the 430s for a good price on Kijiji and CL.

Hi, Beth!

I use a Sigma flash. But there are sometimes compatibility issues
between aftermarket flashes and some Canon models, so I'd suggest a used
Canon flash.

I don't like to use flash, much prefer to crank up the ISO and shoot
available light. Your 30D has good noise performance at ISO 800 and
pretty-good at 1600. Are you shooting this party in a cave? Normal
indoor lighting at 1600 allows reasonable shutter speeds. You might
experiment...

After decades of stalwart attachment to Canon SLRs I switched to a Panasonic Lumix. Not as versatile as a DSLR but plenty of quality in an easy to carry package. Its' low light capability is excellent. I was planning on another Canon but was very impressed with the results my old riding partner was getting with his Lumix and ran across a refurb on Amazon. As my mobility and my visual acuity  shrink I just don't have a great deal of need any longer for all that a DSLR can do.
I do miss Tri-X and my hours in my long gone darkroom.

Hi! :)

I remember the Sigma. I am leaning toward a Canon flash. I found a 430ex ii for $125CDN and am trying to work out when to pick it up. The seller is being annoying. But I’ve found others for $150, a lot with a diffuser, so they’re available for what appears to be a decent deal.

It’s not a cave but it’s a high falootin country club in Toronto and I’m not sure how bright the lights are going to be. It’s also my in-laws’ 50th anniversary party so it’s high stakes. I’d rather err on the side of caution and at least have the option of a decent flash with a diffuser on it to add additional light. I’d like to shoot around 400 ISO to keep noise down.

Also, I’m shooting candids and the lighting conditions might vary.

This is also an opportunity to buy a toy too. :)
