Normally I would agree but I have some reference material in ePub format that I might want to quickly view from time to time. Having an ePub viewer instead of having to import into iBooks just to view the content would help a lot.

ok. with due respect i would not want to pay more for a DEVONthink license to help pay for the capital and support costs DEVON Technologies would bear to provide this. Especially since reading Epub books stored in DEVONthink can already be read with a reader of your choice. Just my two bits, as they say.

Because if we keep extending this line of logic,
why is there PDF support when I can open it in preview?
Why is there HTML support when I can open it in Safari?
Why is there CSV suppoer when I can open in Numbers?

As to Koreader: they are extracting the text from m the PDF and then reformatting that. As long as there is a text layer, you could do that even in DT. But that has nothing to do with the PDF as such (imagine a carefully laid out text flowing around images, in two columns).

This ipad has IOS 5.1.1 and I can't find any compatible epub reader for it. I only bought it to be used exclusively used as an ereader because of the larger print and I expected ibooks to be on it already as part of the base build but I was wrong. PLEASE HELP !!

thanks for all this information Michel ... my only reason for wanting an ipad is to use it as an ereader so I don't really want all the other bells and whistles that come along with the much bigger price.

I am planning to develop a ePub reader for iOS devices. I don't want to use webView for this. In this application, I want features like iBook or stanza app. I want to know, which approch is used in developing Stanza app.

Books in ePub format are HTML with some meta-data. Different generators create differently formatted HTML. The work needed to implement a parser capable of displaying all ePub is a mammoth task! If you do not want to use a web view then your project is doomed from the start.

Stanza, Apple's iBooks, my own ePub reader for iPad, and any other ePub reader I know of all use a standard Web view as the basis. On top of that you need allot of CSS and Javascript to tweak all mutations of ePubs there is.

I know this might be considered a 'niche' feature for some, as I see it's left out of a lot of the feature suggestions for the new Edge; however, alongside the other inking/reading features in old Edge, I used this feature quite frequently. It's great for students/academics. For extra context, I never purchased books from Microsoft's books section of the Microsoft Store--not one, but I definitely used epub files in Edge. Additionally, because there's no other native e-reader in Windows 10, as there is on iOS, MacOS, and most Android-based devices in some capacity, and the e-readers in the Microsoft Store are terrible, this feature is desperately needed for those who use it. What's the point of having Windows 10 devices be touch-enabled without a decent e-reader??

Frankly, this feature distinguished Edge from other browsers for me and was the only reason I kept it on my taskbar as other work that I do required the blink engine. New Edge needs to remain competitive with other browsers, and this would be one way to do it. Otherwise, a native reader separately packaged with OneDrive integration for libraries would be amazing--but I think that could usefully be done here.

@rsfarris I would like to see it too, but I think it will not be avaliable anymore. Maybe in another application... Microsoft is ending her Book Store... Here, in Brazil, Microsoft did not release this feature.

@rsfarris vollkommene Zustimmung.

Old Edge ist mein Standard Tool fr die Anzeige von EPub und PDF. Ein Betriebssystem wie W10 muss Standardformate anzeigen knnen. OLD Edge leistete dies. New Edge bentigt mehr Zeit um ein PDF zu laden. Ausserdem scrollt er nicht so smooth. Sollte die Fhigkeit EPubs anzuzeigen nicht mehr untersttzt werden, wre das eine Schande.

@PHGJ_1957 From my experience, Frieda is not an equal to Edge in the speed of load/paging turning or rendering as Edge was. It also lacks settings to use the default settings for the book, which makes the reading experience less than pleasant. Unfortunately, none of the epub readers for Windows have what I would consider to be an equivalent experience to what iOS provides out of the box. I traded in my iPad for a Surface Go because I thought I could finally had the right size device and reader app to so on Windows, but now I fear I may regret that choice. There are already warnings in the classic Edge that they will disable epub reading in the near future, which seems unnecessary.

I 100% support this. UWP Edge is by far the best and most functional epub reader I've used, and I've used a lot of them. It's the best when it comes to displaying the books as they are supposed to look like. And with features like Immersive Reader, it beats and any other epub reader app. While adding this to Chromium Edge may be a challenge, I say do it because that'll give Edge a definitive edge over other Chromium based browsers. And if that's not possible, at least make it available as an extension, or hell maybe make a new app for reading epubs, maybe add support for mobi, cbr, pdf, djvus too, make an ultimate UWP ebook reader. @rsfarris

@csantigo At least the old UWP edge could be turned back to Reader. And the new edge would be just a browser. (I don't really need support for more than PDF and EPUB thanks to calibre E-book manager in it I convert MOBI to EPUB and CBZ to PDF)

@KoleckOLP Oh no I just read the message that says .epub reading will be discontinued. Microsoft please let us side load the old UWP edge, I can't find any E-book reader that does .pdf and .ebup in one program and make it look and feel as good as MS EDGE.

I absolutely agree. As I find out today that I can no longer use the old Edge browser to open epub files, it must have been due to the last automated system update few days ago. In my experience, the Edge browser is the best reader when it comes to epub files. It beats all other apps I have tried. I consider it a major feature of Windows 10, and especially so for Surface book users.

@rsfarris I have specifically stopped one of my small Dell tablets from updating an older insider build just to preserve the legacy Edge ePub reader for as long as possible. It is just so good - fast, elegant, stylish, integrated dictionary at the tap of any word, Cortana, read aloud, simple light and dark themes, chapter location and book name at a simple tap and just functional overall. It would surprise you how many ePub readers miss these simple key features. Simple and to the point, just like a real book, no unnecessary bloat and junk. Please consider re-enabling this feature on legacy Edge, or at least release it as a standalone app in the Microsoft Store

Hi. Your current process with PDFs just relies on the fact that an Evernote attachment can be opened by any suitable editor, and the amended version saved back to the note. No special 'integration' required. If you can find some specialist epub software with an editor that allows you to highlight text and save back to an epub file, that should be enough. Some web searching and research required though, I think - please let us know if you find a good epub editor.

You could also look into whether highlights transfer when an edited PDF file is converted to an epub file. Calibre is certainly capable of converting the epub file to PDF and back. It also has some epub editing features. Calibre has an inbuilt library folder, but it also edits epubs. It could be useful to try it out.

It would be (IMHO) highly unlikely for Evernote to want to be directly involved in any of this unless there are a lot of users desperate for something similar. You could post in the section below to see if there is any support for the suggestion...
General Feature Requests

Just did a bit more research, it seems that epub files don't support any annotation functionality within themselves. Its the e-reader software that creates that ability, but the annotations never get stored in-file. Which means that, at least for now, I'll have to content myself with exporting highlights as an external file and plonking those into Evernote.

Or converting the epub files to PDF... but then I'll run into another issue, which is whether annotated PDFs will automatically be saved back into Evernote when I'm on a tablet. I'll probably have to manually reupload the changed file every time I'm done reading.

Phew! But nah, I won't make a feature request to Evernote as I'm sure they'll just ignore it. If its taken 7 years of people wanting different highlighter colours and its still not happened, then I doubt they'll add epub reading capabilities any time soon.

It's not exactly what you asked for, but from my experience I would recommend Calibre. It is an e-book management software which includes an EPUB reader. It is a cross-platform open-source software with a lot of options and a powerful and configurable database for your e-books collection.

I exported a fixed layout EPUB and have found that the end result is very poor in ADE 4.4.1, with headings being scrambled. In Calibre 3.43 the results are much better, apart from the text looking a little blocky, a few text box strokes missing and a couple of underlines being slightly too high. When the EPUB was exported as a PDF (Print) the result was perfect.

I have signed up for Flightdeck and ran the EPUB file through that. It came up with some Validation errors. I have no idea how to fix them though and don't know if those errors would contribute to the reader problems

Thank you for your comment Bob. Yes, it does seem odd that a file created and exported with an Adobe program does not read well on an Adobe reading app. I'm afraid I'm a newbie with InDesign, although I'm familiar with other Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Premiere, Audition, Encore. Are the problems I'm experiencing with the epub in ADE mostly a result of ADE's shortcomings or are there things I should be doing prior to export that could alleviate the problems? Thanks again.
