Form 16A Download: How to Download TDS Certificate from TRACES

If you have received any income other than salary, such as interest, commission, rent, etc., you might have noticed that some tax has been deducted at source (TDS) by the payer. This TDS is deposited with the government by the payer on your behalf. But how do you know how much TDS has been deducted and deposited? How do you claim credit for this TDS while filing your income tax return? The answer is Form 16A.

What is Form 16A?

Form 16A is a certificate issued by the deductor (the payer) to the deductee (the receiver) for non-salary payments. It contains the details of the nature of payment, the amount paid, the TDS deducted and deposited, and the PAN of both the parties. Form 16A is issued quarterly within 15 days from the due date of filing TDS returns.

Who should issue Form 16A?

Form 16A should be issued by any person or entity who has deducted TDS on payments other than salary. Some examples of such payments are:

    • Interest on securities, deposits, bonds, etc.
    • Dividend income
    • Rent for land, building, plant, machinery, furniture, etc.
    • Professional fees, technical fees, royalty, etc.
    • Commission, brokerage, contract payment, etc.
    • Any other income subject to TDS

What are the details in Form 16A?

Form 16A contains the following details:

      • Name and address of the deductor and the deductee
      • PAN and TAN of the deductor and PAN of the deductee
      • Certificate number and period of validity
      • Nature and amount of payment
      • Date of payment and deduction of tax
      • Rate and amount of TDS
      • Challan details for depositing TDS
      • Signature of the authorised person

      Why is Form 16A important?

Form 16A is important for the following reasons:

To verify TDS deducted and deposited

You can use Form 16A to check whether the correct amount of TDS has been deducted from your income and deposited with the government. You can also verify this by logging into your account on the e-filing portal and checking your Form 26AS, which is a consolidated statement of all TDS transactions in your name.

To claim tax credit and refund

You can use Form 16A to claim credit for the TDS deducted from your income while filing your income tax return. This will reduce your tax liability or increase your refund. You should ensure that your PAN is correctly mentioned in Form 16A, otherwise you may not get credit for the TDS.

      To file income tax return

You can use Form 16A to report your income from other sources in your income tax return. You should include all the payments on which TDS has been deducted in your gross income and claim deduction for the TDS amount under Chapter VI-A. You should also keep Form 16 A as a proof of your income and TDS for future reference.
