The Dance Historian Is In: Kevin Winkler on Tommy Tune
In this month's Dance Historian Is In, Kevin Winkler, the author of Everything is Choreography: The Musical Theater of Tommy Tune, utilizes film clips and photographs from the Library for the Performing Arts's collections to celebrate the artistry behind Grand Hotel, My One and Only, Nine, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, The Will Rogers Follies, and other Broadway hits. Tommy Tune, the last in a grand lineage led by Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, Gower Champion, and Michael Bennett, took the tradition of complete musical staging by a director-choreographer into a new era defined by technology and spectacle, while providing a link to a new generation of choreographers-turned-directors. Tune's acclaimed performing career will also be explored, as well as the wide-ranging dance influences that have helped shape his unique theatrical vision.
