CIRCUS AND EQUESTRIAN

From High Stepping to Big Tops

A Legacy of Movement: Dancing on Horseback

Take a look at the archival photo on the right from 1925. Did you know that in the early days of Perry-Mansfield, students actually engaged in "dancing on horseback"? It was a beautiful fusion of grace and power that perfectly captured the camp’s spirit of multidisciplinary arts. This year, we are continuing that tradition of daring movement by officially launching our brand-new Circus Arts program!

Leadership from a New Perspective

Our commitment to these unique arts starts at the top. As pictured on the left, did you know our Executive Director Deena Selko has spent more than two decades upside down? With that kind of lifelong passion for acrobatic perspective, we are thrilled to bring professional-level circus instruction to our campus this summer.

The Surprising Connection: Circus & Steeds

While they might seem like different worlds, circus and equestrian arts are historically inseparable.

  • The Magic Ratio: Modern circus was actually "born" in a riding ring! In 1768, Philip Astley discovered that galloping in a 42-foot circle created the perfect centrifugal force to stand upright on a horse's back. This remains the international standard for circus rings today.

  • A Colorado Legend: Did you know that the "Father of Skiing in Colorado," Carl Howelsen, started his American career as a circus performer? After winning the Holmenkollen Gold Medal in Norway, he immigrated in 1905 and performed ski jumps in the Ringling Brothers’ Circus on improvised wood and canvas slides. Longing for real snow, he eventually made his way to the Rockies, where he helped stage the first ski tourney north of Steamboat Springs—on the very slopes we still cherish today!

Availability Update

Whether you want to ride or fly, spots are filling up fast!

  • Equestrian Day Camp: Session 2 (Aug 3 – Aug 7, 2026): While our mini half-day camps are sold out, we still have three spots available for this full-day session! Don't miss your chance to bond with our herd.

  • Circus Arts Program: There is still plenty of space under the "big top"! We are ready to help you soar, tumble, and find your balance in this exciting new addition to our campus.

Why Circus & Equestrian Arts?

Both disciplines offer incredible benefits for developing minds and bodies:

  • Core Strength & Coordination: Balancing on a moving horse or mastering aerial silks requires immense physical awareness.

  • Confidence & Trust: Whether trusting a 1,000-pound animal or a circus spotter, campers learn the value of partnership.

  • Creative Problem Solving: Both arts challenge students to think on their feet and overcome hurdles through persistence.

We can’t wait to see our campers reaching new heights this summer!
