The intention of this workshop is to experiment with the notion of being "out of time" (Kafer, 2013) while creating dance for screen. In the workshop, we will use feminist Alison Kafer's chapter, "Time for Disability Studies and a Future for Crips", as a framework and introduction to Crip Time as a methodology in dance film production.
We will begin the workshop by briefly reviewing Kafer's chapter, then experiment with several video prompts inspired by her writing. At the end of the workshop, participants have the choice to informally present a short video made during the workshop. All participants are welcome, one does not need experience with dance, video, or disability to participate. While reading Kafer's chapter is not required for attendance, it is highly encouraged. The chapter can be found here.
The title of the workshop references Kafer's analysis that "frequency, incidence, and occurrence" are terms the medical field typically uses to describe disability in relation to time. In the workshop, we will also analyze these terms in relationship to moving images and bodies.
