Dear TDAA,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer and finding some much needed rest.

I wanted to make sure to welcome back to the fold our new Visiting Dance Faculty. Please join me in wishing Tyler Orcutt, Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance (cc'd to this email), a wonderful year ahead! We are so very excited to have him join us, and a special thanks to Brian Swanson for helping to expedite the process.

Tyler, welcome back!

Please read below for more information about our fabulous new colleague.

Tyler Orcutt is a dance artist, educator, and choreographer whose professional performance career includes work with NobleMotion Dance (2020–present [NMD]) and Repertory Dance Theatre (2012–2020 [RDT]), with whom he toured nationally and internationally. His recent research explores what scientific inquiry can reveal about the creative mind in motion.

Through his work with NMD, he has collaborated with neuroscientists in a longitudinal study measuring brain activity during live dance performances. Notably, Tyler was a featured artist in the project’s presentation at the United Nations’ AI for Good 2024 Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as in Monterrey, Mexico; Washington, D.C.; Houston; and a 2023 TEDx Talk titled Science Worth Dancing About.

During his time with RDT, Tyler performed lead roles in 20th-century modern dance works by Ted Shawn, Michio Itō, Doris Humphrey, José Limón, Donald McKayle, and Merce Cunningham. He also had the privilege of working with contemporary artists including Bebe Miller, Lar Lubovitch, Danielle Agami, Bill Evans, Noa Zuk & Ohad Fishof, and Zvi Gotheiner, among many others.

Choreographically, Tyler investigates the intersection of rigorous physicality and absurdist aesthetics, examining how this dynamic influences audience perception and interpretive frameworks. His work has been presented in Lucca, Italy (Dance Italia); Houston (Barnstorm Dance Festival, NMD II); Phoenix (Movement Source Dance Company); Salt Lake City (Emerge, 12 Minutes Max); New York City via live stream (Artist Salon – The Wallace Foundation); Huntsville (Sam Houston State University [SHSU]); and at the American College Dance Association, as well as at various community colleges.

He has previously served as an adjunct lecturer at SHSU and the University of Houston. Tyler holds an MFA in Dance from SHSU and a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of South Florida.
