Below is the info from UUSC of the 100 gardens pledge that our church has joined with our support of the Haiti garden project. How touching it is to my heart to be part of something bigger than our small community that reaches the hearts of those in Haiti. We have decided to start small this year and donate the money we already raised to go to Haiti toward the project in Haiti rather than sell what little yield we will get this first year. Instead we are creating a healthy snack garden for our kids and continue to support and raise awareness of the needs in Haiti with our tribute garden and our continued outreach.
Thank you all for your support. Pray for sun Sunday :)

Dear Katie,

UUSC supporters around the world have committed to growing more than 100 food gardens and sponsoring more than 100 gardens for families in Haiti. What a way to celebrate Earth Day!

Thank you for your commitment. Here are a few of the stories shared so far from other participants:

  • First Unitarian Society in Minneapolis incorporated the garden project into their annual service auction. They provided an overview of the project and asked for bids to support the project. This large congregation successfully raised over $5,000 for gardens in Haiti!

  • Several congregations are planning to grow and sell the produce. Some of these congregations are using organic raised beds already created on the congregation grounds; others are creating new container gardens! They will donate the revenue from the sales to the 100 Gardens project.

  • One of my colleagues at UUSC is planning to make a birthday wish — asking her family and friends to donate to the 100 Gardens project online.

Our online how-to resources include additional suggestions on both gardening and fundraising.

The 100 Gardens project is part of UUSC’s Justice Sunday 2014 program, which promotes food sustainability with a focus on Haiti. If the total amount of donations received from UUSC supporters exceeds $25,000, we’ll be able not only to build 100 gardens in Haiti but also to put additional donations toward more gardens, an urban tire garden training center for Haitian families, and other food sustainability projects in Haiti! The possibilities are incredible.

Thank you so much for your participation!
