Sudbury's 2025 Annual Town Meeting will start on Monday May 5, 2025 at
7:30 PM in the L-S Auditorium. The Energy and Sustainability Committee has submitted Article 27. If it passes,
Sudbury would join 49 other MA municipalities who have voted to use the
'specialized' version of the building energy code. The 'specialized' code:
Ensures
new construction is consistent with Massachusetts' goal of net-
zero carbon emissions by 2050 (as set by the 2021 State Climate Bill)
Includes measures aimed at energy efficiency, reduced heating loads,
and efficient electrification. Renovations are
not affected:
The Opt-in Specialized Stretch Code only impacts new construction. Existing homeowners are unaffected, even for renovations and additions, which follow current code.
It will apply only to new construction and will ultimately result in higher resale value of houses, as MA regulations continue to lead construction toward lower energy costs through the use of renewable energy sources, making houses that already comply more desirable.
For more details, the State Department of Energy Resources (DOER) has published a
detailed written FAQ and presented on this topic in Sudbury on 10
Sep 2024.
