What Mass Save offers
$750 instant rebate on qualifying ENERGY STAR® heat pump water heatersSplit-system units (where the heat pump is separate from tank) may qualify for up to $1,500
To receive the rebate instantly, have a licensed plumber install the unit or buy from participating retailers (Home Depot, Lowe’s) using a verified code
0% financing (HEAT Loan) is available for qualified home energy upgrades, up to $25,000
Eligibility & requirements
Must be a Massachusetts residential electric or gas customer served by a Mass Save sponsor utility (Eversource, National Grid, Unitil, Cape Light Compact, Berkshire Gas, etc.)
The equipment must be ENERGY STAR certified, meet minimum performance (ex: UEF 3.30 for many units)
Installation must be by a licensed plumber between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025
Must replace an existing electric resistance, propane, natural gas, or oil water heater in a 1–4 unit residential building
Verification inspection may be required
Rebate can’t exceed the cost of the equipment and cannot be combined with other Mass Save incentives for the same equipment
Federal tax credit (via IRA / Section 25C)
You may still claim up to 30% of the install cost (post-rebate), capped at $2,000 for a heat pump water heater, under the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit – until December 31, 2025.
This credit is part of the same umbrella that allows up to $3,200 annually for qualifying home efficiency upgrades.
