A workshop on Upscaling Corporate Responsibility Through Human
Resource Management
November 13-14, 2008
Venue: Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, Chanakyapuri
Organised by the Centre for Education, Research & Training in
Responsible Business
(The Centre is a wing of the Global Gandhian Trusteeship and Corporate
Responsibility Foundation, a registered Trust.)
It is now becoming increasingly evident that capitalism without
responsibility is a major reason for the current economic problems.
British Prime Minister George Brown, writing in the Daily Telegraph,
London, has blamed unbridled capitalism for the present turmoil in
world economy. He has said, "the first financial crisis of the global
age has now laid bare the weaknesses of unbridled free markets."
Several international financial leaders have indicated that even in
these troubled financial times companies need to continue and
strengthen their CSR agenda.
For a company to compete long-term, and especially during present
global economic turbulence, a corporate social responsibility (CSR)
strategy is more important than ever. Also important is that corporate
responsibility should be embedded in the company's policy and at all
levels of the organisation Surveys have indicated that the Human
Resources Departments have the capacity and the experience to ensure
that corporate responsibility is deeply embedded within the organization.
The Centre for Training & Research in Responsible Business is
presenting a workshop on November 13-14, 2008 at the Vishwa Yuvak
Kendra Chankyapuri focusing on the role of the Human Resource
Department in managing social responsibility issues. The theme of the
workshop is Upscaling Corporate Responsibility through Human Resource
Management. Topics covered will address social responsibility
principles, issues and implementation while showcasing local company
initiatives.
The training programme has been designed by experienced
trainers with several years experience in Corporate Responsibility. It
will be conducted by practicing CR and HR personnel working with well
known
national and transnational corporates in India.
Confirmed speakers at the two day session include: Ms Vikas Goswami,
Lead CSR Microsoft; Mridula Sharma, Centre for Applied Manpower
Research; Hari Nair, VP, Human Resources, Sona Koyo Steering Systems;
Suresh Kr Pramar, Executive Director, Centre for Training & Research;
Prof Sanjai Bhatt, Head Department of Social Work; Niranjan Khatri, GM
ITC Welcomgroup Initiatives.
Why Companies should participate in this Workshop: A recent
international presentation has pointed out that operating without a
CSR strategy could be perceived as a risk by stakeholders. "Companies
must assess their perceived risks, including CSR, as these factors can
adversely affect the achievement of a company's objectives. What
companies and organizations aiming at long-term profitability and
credibility need to know is that social responsibility is essential to
their sustainability," says the study.
Closer home several state government has begun framing rules to make
companies become more responsible to their stakeholders. The Gujarat
government is drafting a fresh Company law which will make it
mandatory for companies to spend a goodly part of their profits on
corporate responsibility. At the Centre codes are being prepared to
make business houses to take a more serious view of their
responsibilities to the community and other stakeholders. It is
therefore necessary that companies, and more particularly the Public
Sector companies, to prepare their CSR functionaries to handle these
new responsibilities
