Below is the link to a petition from Residents Against Sainsbury’s Horfield
(RASH).
And why should we be concerned about this in Bedminster? Because the
concerns about Sainsbury’s in Horfield are the same as those we are faced with
at Ashton Gate. Throughout the city there are linked efforts to preserve
and enhance high streets and independent shops, which have been under attack
from the relentless march of the supermarkets. In Bristol Sainsbury’s has
been particularly virulent.
Bedminster has won the Mary Porteus award to help the high streets here,
but the effect could still be overwhelmed by a massive regional superstore on
the doorstep. And other areas in Bristol do not even have this
funding. Supermarket success anywhere in Bristol has a domino effect, and
puts the city as a whole at risk from the unsustainable agriculture, manufacture
and retail methods of these non-local conglomerates.
