Great news!   It was reported this week that the Coastal Commission is set to consider a settlement proposal with Cemex - avoiding years of legal battles.  If approved, the settlement would halt sand mining in three years, would restore the land, and protect the property in perpetuity for public access, low-impact recreation, habitat protection and public education.

Help ensure that the 12 Commissioners approve the settlement.
1.
Show up at the Coastal Commission meeting on Thursday, July 13 at the CSUMB World Theater Building, 5260 6th Ave. in Seaside.  Ask the Commissioners to adopt the settlement and thank them for their rigorous pursuit of this agreement.  Public Comment begins at 9am.  If you don’t feel like speaking, we’ll have free stop-sand-mining-our-beach t-shirts for you to wear.

2.  Send letter or email to the Coast Commission by Friday, July 7, 5pm.  Scroll down this email to find more details provided by Kevin Miller, Surfrider Foundation, Monterey Chapter.

REMINDER:  Thursday, July 6, 7 PM, Seaside City Council Regular Meeting.  The Council will consider supporting the Coastal Commission’s proposed settlement to bring an end to Cemex sand mining operations. Please attend and urge the Council to write a letter of support.  We’ll have free t-shirts for you to wear to show your support.  The Agenda packet will be posted HERE at least 72 hours prior to the meeting.
Location:  City Hall, 440 Harcourt Ave., Seaside

Thanks for staying actively engaged in this important issue.

Best wishes,
Catherine Crockett

The sun is setting on the Cemex sand mine.

Great news! On July 13, the California Coastal Commission will consider an agreement that would close the Cemex Lapis Sand Mine in Marina. The mine has been linked to severe coastal erosion in the southern Monterey Bay, which is losing more coastline than anywhere else in the state.

Surfrider, Save our Shores, and all our partners in this fight are in support of the agreement. But the Coastal Commission needs to know that you support it too.

This is the final public meeting on this issue and it is imperative that we have a strong showing- please consider taking a late, long lunch that afternoon. We will provide T-shirts, signs, and donuts to keep us energized!

What you can do
