Blue Planet Foundation seeking nominations for Honua energy leadership award

HONOLULU— The Blue Planet Foundation, a local non-profit dedicated to Hawaii’s energy independence and ending carbon-based fuels on Earth, is seeking nominations for its 2009 Honua Award recognizing leadership in clean energy. The Honua (“Earth”) Award is given annually to recognize individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to moving Hawai‘i along the path towards a clean sustainable energy future. Their achievements affecting our energy future could be economic, social/cultural, environmental, or some combination.

“Hawai‘i is home to many people and organizations working hard to wean our islands from imported crude,” said Jeff Mikulina, Executive Director of the Blue Planet Foundation. “Blue Planet wants to recognize those making our clean energy future a reality.”

The first Honua Award was presented in 2008 to Maurice Kaya, the former Hawai‘i state energy office administrator.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, October 12. Nominations can be made online at www.blueplanetfoundation.org/honua. Nominations can also be made via mail to Honua Awards, Blue Planet Foundation, 55 Merchant Street, Suite 1700, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813. The nominating letter should state the nominee’s name, organization, and a description of why the nominee deserves to receive the Blue Planet Foundation Honua award in 250 words or less.

The selection committee for the Honua Award consists of the Blue Planet Foundation Board of Directors:
•    Henk Rogers, software entrepreneur and founder of the Blue Planet Foundation;
•    Akemi Rogers, owner of Fishcake and co-founder of Blue Lava Technologies;
•    Ben Cayetano, former Governor of the State of Hawai‘i;
•    Prof. Peter Crouch, Dean of the College of Engineering at UH Manoa;
•    Stanley Hong, Esq., an attorney and leader in business, civic and community affairs;
•    Elizabeth Kapu'uwailani Lindsey, Ph.D., an award-winning filmmaker and anthropologist;
•    Bob Lloyd, Chairman of the V Foundation for Cancer Research;
•    David Williams, retired Senior Vice President of the Whirlpool Corporation; and
•    Prof. Maxine Burkett, Director of the Center for Island Climate Adaptation and Policy.

The award will be given on Friday, October 23, in a public ceremony during Henry Kapono’s “Green Aloha - Wild Hawaiian Premiere Event” at “Walls” on Waikiki Beach.
