Abstract
"Smart Grid" is the new buzz word in the utility industry. Some may
have seen the GE and IBM television commercials about a Smart Grid for
a smarter future. There are many goals that could be achieved with a
full implementation of a Smart Grid. And in fact, each utility could
have their own version of a Smart Grid depending on the issues that
need to be resolved. Some Smart Grids assist with the integration of
renewable and distributed generation while others may increase the
reliability of the transmission and distribution system. This seminar
presentation will provide an overview of "What is a Smart Grid?" from
a utility perspective, describe what a Smart Grid is based on the
Department of Energy definition, present examples that are being
implemented, present HECO's approach for the Smart Grid and touch upon
the cyber security issues.
