Abstract

A summary of OTEC’s technology and economics will be presented. Given that proven World Oil Reserves can only satisfy present day demand for about 50 years, it would make sense to begin to implement the first generation of OTEC plantships providing electricity, via submarine power cables, to shore stations. These would be followed, in 20 to 30 years, with grazing OTEC plants operating as a self-contained factory ships on which an energy-intensive product like ammonia or hydrogen is produced. The main advantage of this design is that the plant, with its mobility, can cruise or graze around the tropical waters and is essentially decoupled from land.

About the speaker:

Dr. Vega is an internationally well known scholar in renewable energy with extensive research experiences in developing the OTEC technology. He managed the design, construction and operation of an experimental 210kWh open cycle OTEC plant for the production of electricity and desalinated water on the Big Island in Hawaii, the first proven application of this technology in the world. Dr. Vega received his BS degrees from the U.S. Naval Academy, his MS from Caltech and his PhD in Applied Mechanics, Oceanography and Applied Physics from UCSD.
