Monica, Kurt and I went to a meeting at City Hall yesterday to discuss the Community Clean-Up week that starts June 4. General information about the program is at http://www.ci.reynoldsburg.oh.us/page13404056.aspx. Here are some specific outcomes for our group that follow what we discussed when we met in February.
- Kurt will coordinate a creek clean up.
- There will be an electronics-recycling drop-off, provided by Ohio Drop-Off. I would guess that Mark M's Free Geek drop-off in January has helped put this on the agenda.
- Home Energy Action (the initiative I am involved with) will do a low-tech home-energy assessment and simple fixes in up to three homes as part of the usual 'Fix-Up Assistance' for those of restricted capacity.
- Monica raised the option of organizing recycling of building materials in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity etc - this would be for next year.
- We (Sustainable Reynoldsburg) will set up a recycling-awareness display at City Hall in the area where the paper shredding, bulk waste and electronics drop-off and red bin exchange will take place. Yes, I took a bit of a liberty here, since we discussed doing it last year and didn't get round to it, so I hope some of us can pull something together this year. I was thinking about 'Did You Know…' type of messages on wire frames along the road side, focused on things that most people aren't clear about (such as recycling spray cans). Monica suggested displaying the actual item (e.g. spray can) along with the relevant information.
As always, lots of volunteers are wanted for various events, including the creek clean-up and the energy fix-up. I will send a separate message about the recycling display.
