Hello all,
I've just spoken with Jonathan Kissel of Rumpke, who manages tours of the recycling facility: jonathan...@rumpke.com, (513) 741-6062.
The tour normally lasts 45 - 60 minutes and can be scheduled to start any time from 9 am to 2 pm on weekdays (no weekend tours). The best group size is 10-15 people. Any larger and they have to split into two groups running sequentially. Visitors must wear closed shoes with reasonably hard soles. Rumpke provides hard hats and safety glasses. Jonathan would need to travel up from Cincinnati to run the tour. He is willing to flex, but asks if we can easily manage Tuesday March 23 since he has a tour already scheduled that day at 2pm and it would save him another trip.
The daytime schedule may be a challenge for many people, but let me put two contrasting options and see what you think.
Option 1: a high-expectations tour. When I pressed Jonathan , he said that if we provide a list of potential participants who are in a position to really influence recycling rates, together with a preferred date and time, they will make a real effort to accommodate us near the end of the working day. They serve around 10,000 households in Reynoldsburg, so if they think we will make a difference, they will flex. This would enable us to invite lead school teachers and probably more Council and blockwatch people, and we would want to structure this to ensure follow up in Reynoldsburg.
Option 2: a lower-expectations tour for those who happen to be available. The recycling facility is at 1191 Fields Avenue, which is just off I71/I670 near downtown Columbus. For those working in Columbus it might be manageable as an extended lunch break. That would not work for teachers. A lunchtime tour on March 23 would be very easy for Jonathan and would keep Rumpke onside for a more substantial tour at a later date.
If some people can make it, I am inclined to go for option 2, with a lunchtime tour on March 23 that will give us a better idea of what we can do in Reynoldsburg. A bigger tour would then be part of a strategy with clearer expectations among participants and more chance of follow-through.
What do you think? How might this work for you?
Mark
I love this idea, and I should be able to make myself available for a lunchtime tour on March 23rd.

Believe it or not, I’m actually wide open on March 23rd so the lunchtime tour works for me!
Thanks for setting this up, Mark!

PS: We missed you guys at today’s Walk to School forum. We had 30 people in attendance and they were all so interested in the school pool program!
