Thanks Brian,
I came across studies 20 years ago that drew the conclusion that Roundup was a highly dangerous substance. But this is very interesting and revealing nevertheless. Why are some people so daft?  Is it fluoride in the water supply?  Did they hold on to their aluminium cookware for too long? Are they just born idiots? All of the above???

Not that I want to support Monsanto anyway, but I just assume that (any of) their products should not be touched with a ten foot barge pole.
They should be prohibited from sale in the country.

The government is quite happy to allow the sale of such toxic substances, to open up new uranium mines, put fluoride in the water, yet fine someone for not wearing a bicycle helmet because they claim they're concerned about their health. Bizarre.

One other thing. It is estimated that around 250,000 Indian farmers have taken their own lives in the past decade because of the effects of Monsanto's products.

Their GM activities could wipe out much life across the planet.

(To me, buying Monsanto products is a bit like the Greens propping up a government which is undertaking the biggest expansion in uranium mining in this country in over 30 years, an extraordinarily dangerous and immoral activity.)

Thanks for your forthright comments, Jon - I appreciate them! and thanks Brian for posting this. Yes, I also have been hearing things about Roundup for years, but people seemed to think it was the best option of a whole bag of dangerous chemicals. Thanks for posting this Brian!

Thanks Shivanii for appreciating my forthright comments. I have a bee in my bonnet about Roundup, and can get a bit stroppy about it when it comes up in conversation. Partly because I've done quite a bit of gardening around Maleny, and I've observed it so commonly and flagrantly used. Most farms use tanker-loads of it around the place and I'd be curious to know if there is a council anywhere in Australia that prohibits its use. Perhaps there is.

And I mention the Monsanto connection because I don't think we should be supporting the company.

Roundup is a strain of herbicide related to and similar in composition to agent orange. Robyn Ramsay has seen the genetic damage first-hand to the grandchildren of victims of agent orange exposure from the Vietnam War.

GM strains of soybeans, canola etc are now bred to cope with higher amounts of Roundup- sprayed to kill the weeds. Consequently the harvests in recent times would often contain higher concentrations of Roundup residue. So if you want to ingest some Roundup, you don't have to necessarily spray it around your garden. Just go shopping at the IGA in Maleny. A ridiculous number of products contain canola oil these days: I picked up a tub of "organic" hommus at the IGA two weeks ago. It contained organic chickpeas, but also canola oil. Quite possibly GM canola oil.

Anyway, just wanted to add those points. Best plan is to grow as much of your own food as possible and save seed .
