Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for getting rid of an old mattress without sending it to the landfill. Doing some Google research on this question, I've learned that some other cities and states have recycling programs for large items, like mattresses, but I didn't see anything similar in Central Ohio. I searched the Sustainable Delaware Resources page, the Delaware City Utilities Residential Disposal and Curbside Rules & Regulations, as well as the website of the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, as well as other sites & businesses. I haven't found any place that will take them without being usable by others.

Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, Google Now suggested this on my Android: a No Nonsense Landlord blog post on "How to Get Rid of a Mattress for Free" with instructions (and pics!) for how to tear one down into its component parts. http://www.nononsenselandlord.com/2014/05/how-to-get-rid-of-a-mattress-for-free/ Sims Bros. will probably take the metal springs and frame...

David,

I am not aware of any mattress recycling outfits in Central Ohio.  If you want to disassemble the mattress and recycle the scrap metal, that is one option.  The rest will have to be landfilled as the foam and fabrics cannot be recycled locally.  If you cannot fit the rest into your city toter, you can take it to the Delaware County Solid Waste Transfer Station at 888 US 42 North. You can call them at 369-7700 for the cost.

For those reading this, SWACO or the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio is Franklin County's Solid Waste District.  Delaware County is part of the DKMM (Delaware, Knox, Marion, Morrow) Solid Waste District.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Thanks, Jenifer!

I've used the transfer station below. They must not have much of a web presence, whereas the SWACO has a very informative, helpful website.

David and All,

You can find information on disposing all kinds of things by visiting Keep Delaware County Beautiful pages at the Delaware General Health District's website at  http://www.delawarehealth.org/content.cfm?article=litter-and-recycling

Yes, SWACO does have an informative site, however some of their events and activities are not normally open to Delaware County residents.

While the transfer station does not have a website, DKMM does:  www.dkmm.org
