Jack Florance Pool Reaches Capacity
On an exceptionally hot afternoon on Fri., 6/16, Mingo Park’s Jack Florance Pool reached capacity and had to turn visitors away. When too many people are in the water, the lifeguards cannot see the bottom of the pool anymore and it becomes a safety issue. At its 6/20 meeting, the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board deliberated on the situation. It seemed to agree with the current practice that holders of prepaid season memberships should continue to have access to the pool, but that others such as camp groups should be asked to leave and visitors with daily passes redirected to the YMCA indoor pool at S. Houk Rd. for the same price. A formal policy will be presented to the board at its July meeting. Public comments are welcome at the meetings of city commissions, committees, and boards. One of the members wondered whether the time has come to look at adding a second outdoor swimming pool. The city continues to grow and will reach the 40,000 mark soon, but has lost several privately owned larger pools in recent years where people used to swim. Obviously, the YMCA would seem to be a good location for such an addition, or perhaps the expanding southeast side of the city should be looked at as a potential site. – The pool's summer season is from May 17 through Aug. 15 this year. Admission is $6 for adults ($4 after 6 pm) and $4 for children between the ages 3-17. Individual and family memberships for the season are also available. [draft 6/20/17]
