Hello everyone,
My wife and I recently moved to Delaware in June, 2013. As we both enjoy outdoor activities Delaware seemed like a good place for our first house. We have a pretty good sized garden and spend lots of our time outside, even in trees, as I'm an arborist for OSU. We live just South of the cemetery on the massive one way (Pumphrey and English
Terrace). It wasn't long after moving in that I started to notice a foul smell on the air more often than not. I can detect said smell about five of seven days. So, naturally I "googled" it. And found this forum. I have read all previous posts (I think) on said topic and visited all the marvelous external links and was just curious as to what's going on? We went jogging earlier in the week. I consider myself a moderately fit individual as climbing to the tops of large trees is quite physically demanding, so jogging for me is no big deal. We jogged around the one way twice. As we are all moderately intelligent individuals we know that when we exert ourselves aerobically the alveoli in our lungs attempt to take in more air to compensate for the aerobic stress we've placed our body under. So any substance that is in the air we breathe is in turn what gets into our system. Agreed? Agreed. Just after the jog my lungs 'hurt' and I developed a massive headache
that lasted the better part of a day. I know that sounds strange but I've never experienced anything like it before and I've run a myriad of 5k's, hauled more tree brush than I care to admit, was once upon a time an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, and even spent time in the US Army. Am I beating a dead horse? Good. Now when I want to go outside I first smell the air. If it smells okay, I will precede outside, keep calm and carry on. However, if it smells as though it's been ridden with chemicals, I put on my respirator and continue about any chores, etc… Sounds paranoid and crazy right? I agree. The looks I get from people driving by is priceless. However, when the smell is horrific, as it was this morning and is tonight 15 Jan 2014, I will get a dull headache that lasts the rest of the evening and into the morning. So, headache or funny looks? I'll go with funny looks.
These web address are really neat, especially the Toxics Release Inventory (1st one listed, TRI). You should really check them out. You can see what companies release what chemicals, what health effects they have, and how much of what. Sort of like a "Who's Who" of Toxins in Delaware atmosphere. You can read reports of how companies like PPG Industries Inc (TRI ID: 43015PPGND760PI who account for 86% of TRI in Delaware county) are in violation of complying to certain EPA standards. I can't tell you what those are as I'm no EPA official but you can clearly read that they're in violation. I'm not trying to pick on anyone or any company I'm just reading the facts as I see them. I think supporting local business is great. I guess what makes me nervous is that
knowing what we as humans smell, i.e. dog poop, are actually tiny bits of particles from what we are smelling entering our body. So if I smell Ethylbenzene on a fine Delaware evening, aren't I inhaling that into my lungs? God forbid I should want to jog, garden, walk my dogs, or even raise kids. Perhaps I am reading too much into this? Those headaches tell me otherwise though. Let's look at asbestos as an example. Years ago humans thought it was a miracle of modern science and it "
became increasingly popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century because of its sound absorption, average tensile
strength, its resistance to fire, heat, electrical and chemical damage, and affordability." (Source: Wikipedia) And now? Well you inhale it now and in twenty years you have lung cancer. Awesome.
So, SDO folk, general public, company owners, whomever is readying, maybe even nobody, haha, I encourage you to read the other posts and spend hours lost in those websites as I have and maybe some kind soul could bring me up to speed? Let me know what is going on? I would not have moved here if I knew about this
earlier. Talk about first time home buyer's remorse!
Thanks all,
Chris Ellwood
