If you are planning to get photovoltaics installed on your house or business property, you should join an existing solar coop or form one yourself with your neighbors,  go to the DC SUN site below and follow their instructions. You can apply for a DC Rebate in this online application, then you will be put on the waiting list.
The message you receive from the DC government site* will be "Page not Found", but you should get confirmation by email in day or so. They should change this misleading response

Sustainable DC should vigorously support a renewal of  DC Rebates with the installation of photovoltaics.  This program now with a big waiting list, is very important and should be vigorously supported by the Energy Working Group, along with other incentives for solarization, particularly for low income homeowners and renters.  You probably heard about his before, but since I have missed all but one meeting of this working group I wanted to add my two cents.

While coops are a nice educational tool and provide a sense of community, as well as other benefits, it is not necessary to be in one to obtain the DC incentive.  If you are not currently in a coop, it would only delay your application to spend time forming or joining one.  However, don't be too optimistic about getting a grant soon.  Recently, the waiting list already had 309 applicants.

As to the size of your system, here is a rule of thumb used by Capital Sun Group.  With the optimum tilt, if you want to generate only as much power as you will use, the size of your system should be no larger than your annual consumption in kWhr diivided by 1270 kWhr/kW (to get the number of KW you currently use).  If your inverters are Enphase, or you use Sanyo panels (because of they are less sensite to mid-day heat), divide by 1400 and if you use both Enphase and Sanyo products, divide by 1540.  If your a/c needs are currently large, your solar system will provide some shade that will reduce your bill, so you could also take that into account.  If you plan to install Inflector in your windows or Lomit in your attic during the useful life of your solar system, you would divide annual usage by an even larger number, though a site visit is recommended to give a precise estimate of savings.  Judy

The online application process allows one to put down DC SUN instead of local solar coops. Yes, the waiting list is long, and this is another reason for Sustainable DC to strongly support extension of the rebate system with adequate funding

Judy, great comments – thanks for providing a little of the ABC’s of installing solar panels.
