Friends,
At 2:15 pm EST TODAY the U.S. Senate will begin voting on an amendment to extend solar and renewable energy programs as part of the highway bill (S. 1813). That means we have 30 minutes to contact Senators and urge them to vote YES on the amendment offered by Sen. Stabenow to extend the 1603 Treasury Program.
That's right - we have an opportunity to revive the recently-expired Treasury Grant Program that makes the federal Investment Tax Credit useful in today's economy. An impressive 22,000 solar energy projects have been installed across 47 states thanks to this federal initiative that allows large energy customers and some homeowners to receive a cash grant rather than the usual tax credit when they invest in solar and other renewables. The program makes the federal incentive useful in these times of lean revenues and low tax liability. The grant program has the same impact on the Treasury as the tax credit, but delivers the value more efficiently in a recession economy - all that means Americans get more solar bang for the buck. In total, the program has successfully driven nearly $3.5 billion in private solar project investment and supported tens of thousands of jobs in our nation's clean energy economy.
Contact information for Senators is available here: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
The Koch Brothers have organized a campaign against this amendment and the Hill is getting bombarded with anti-renewable emails. Help us speak up in support! Every call and email makes a difference, so let's flood the phones and internets for the next half hour.
Onwards,
Rosalind + team
