Dear Built Environment Working Group,

It's goal and action prioritization time! Please vote today; we will be tabulating the results at COB today and providing our top 10 action list to Laine.

On Monday we had our fourth meeting, for evaluating and prioritizing the goals and actions brainstormed in meeting 3. However, the goal & action lists proved to need a lot more work, so each sub-group ended up spending the majority of their time re-working the action list, and there was no time for the prioritization exercise. Now it's time to prioritize! I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get this out to you; some of the sub-groups had to complete their evaluations, and I also spent a while today trying to make a nifty form. But sometimes simpler is better.

Please find attached an excel spreadsheet with all the goals and actions, grouped by category. There are 33 goals and 80 actions. Each action is now associated with a goal, though not every goal has associated actions. To the right of the sheet there is a matrix listing how the groups evaluated the goals and actions. I have also attached a word document with further descriptions of the meaning of the various columns.

Everyone gets 15 VOTES for prioritizing the actions. Please read through the list and add a "1" in the left-most column for the goals and actions you think should be top priorities for making DC's built environment sustainable. If we were in person, you would be doing this with colored dot stickers. Just as with the dot exercise, if there is a goal or action you feel particularly strongly about, feel free to give it more than one vote by writing down a higher number in the left-most column. The number in the upper left will tally your votes as you go.

Once you have selected your 15 votes, save the document and email it to me as an attachment. Please do this by COB on Friday, Feb 3 (today)!

Next Wednesday, February 8, is the Sustainable DC Meeting 5, where we will present our vision statement and top 10 and top 25 goals/actions to other working groups. So today's prioritization is super important.

If you have questions or technical problems, please email or call me.

Hello Marshall -

This is tremendous work!!
Very, very well done.

Attached are my responses w/ certain 'high-impact ideas' carrying more weight.
There are ripple effect reasons behind this weighting - I will be pleased to share these reasons with my Green Ribbon Committee colleagues at the appropriate moment.

I am terribly sorry I have been unable to attend a meeting in person - I teach a grad class on the business aspects of sustainability at UMD on Tuesday nights which has conflicted w/ several of the program dates.
I will persevere to attend the next session, schedule willing.

Thank you for your leadership.

Thanks for the matrix.  However, line 48 reads “Performance-based parking.”  It should read “Performance-based parking pricing.”  In other words, the price of parking should reflect actual demand.  Parking would be more expensive in places and at times where demand is high.  This encourages use of transit and makes parking available for those who are willing to pay for it, thereby reducing the traffic congestion and pollution caused by folks who drive round-and-round when parking spaces are not available.   This is being done on a pilot basis in a few neighborhoods.  The action is to expand this citywide.

Ryan, Thanks for the clarification.

People who were at meeting 3/4, I want to Remind you that all working group members are voting across all goals/actions, not just in the category area you contributed to. If you only want to vote in your category that is ok but you should not feel confined to that.

Thanks!

Marshall

These are "constructive observations." I have several, but I will limit
them to two in order to avoid creating a laundry list.

The "build environment working group" has not talked enough about
social equity during our periodic meetings as we worked towards
this important milestone of voting on goals and actions.

On January 25, three goals and ten actions were submitted to the
Google site for addressing social equity. The subject line was
"More Goals and Actions for the Land Use Subcategory." Based on
reviewing the new spreadsheet, I only recognize one action
clearly, and I recognize two additional actions partially from the
suggestions offered on January 25.

The goals/actions were submitted to the Google site in anticipation that
the work group would have limited time to talk about social equity in
the context of the District's sustainability plan.

I am raising this because the District will not realize "truly
sustainable outcomes" by focusing on goals and actions which boost the
environment and the economy while rendering invisible the realities of
poverty and inequality. In short, citizens in the District need a
"both/and" set of solutions.

Again, it is great that we have reached this milestone in the process.
However, I thought it would be best to raise this now rather than wait
until April.
