Hello Community Partners,

The Social Advocacy Network of Disabilities (SAND) believes that accessibility and sustainability go hand in hand.

A truly sustainable community includes everyone, including Disabled individuals and people with diverse access needs. Accessibility strengthens communities by increasing inclusion, improving transportation equity, supporting community health, and creating public spaces that work for people of all ages and abilities.

We created the attached infographic to help highlight the important connection between accessibility, inclusion, and sustainability.

Colorful SAND infographic titled “Accessibility is Sustainability.” The infographic explains how accessibility, universal design, inclusive recreation, transportation equity, disability inclusion, and community connection contribute to sustainable communities. It highlights SAND’s work in advocacy, accessibility consulting, education, and systems change. Footer text reads: “Access Together. Include Together. Sustain Together.”

Accessible Plain Text Version:

ACCESSIBILITY IS SUSTAINABILITY

A sustainable community includes everyone.

When communities are accessible to people of all abilities, they are stronger, healthier, more connected, and more resilient for everyone.

HOW ACCESSIBILITY BUILDS A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY

Social Sustainability
Inclusion reduces isolation and strengthens community connection.

Transportation Equity
Accessible transit systems ensure everyone can participate in daily life.

Inclusive Recreation
Parks, trails, and outdoor spaces should be usable and enjoyable for all abilities.

Universal Design
Designing for all ages and abilities creates safer, more functional places for everyone.

Community Health
Accessible spaces support physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Aging and Disability Access
Communities that include Disabled people also support older adults and future generations.

Environmental Justice
Equitable access to green spaces and resources benefits people and the planet.

NOTHING ABOUT SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES SHOULD EXCLUDE DISABLED PEOPLE.

Disabled voices must be included early in planning, decision-making, and community design.

Together, we can build a future that works for everyone.

OUR WORK CREATES CHANGE

Advocacy and Education
Raising awareness and promoting accessibility for all.

Accessibility Audits and Consulting
Identifying barriers and creating practical, inclusive solutions.

Community Connection
Building inclusive spaces, events, and peer support.

Policy and Systems Change
Working with local leaders to build equitable, long-term solutions.

ACCESSIBLE TODAY. SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW.

Access empowers.
Inclusion strengthens.
Communities thrive.

A more inclusive community is a more sustainable community.

Together, we can build a Corvallis where everyone belongs.
