Hello Sustainable Corvallis Coalition Members,

Today, we celebrate the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA is one of our nation’s most significant civil rights laws, helping ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to employment, transportation, education, businesses, public spaces, and community life.

The ADA has transformed millions of lives over the past 36 years, but creating truly inclusive communities is an ongoing effort. Every improvement, whether it’s a more accessible building, an inclusive event, a user-friendly website, or thoughtful policies, helps make our communities stronger for everyone.

At the Social Advocacy Network of Disabilities (SAND), we’re proud to support that mission through advocacy, education, accessibility consulting, community initiatives, and by employing people with disabilities.

What Does Disability Access Consulting Include?

Accessibility goes far beyond ramps and parking spaces. We help organizations create environments that are welcoming, inclusive, and usable for everyone.

SAND provides consulting for businesses, nonprofits, schools, public agencies, housing providers, community organizations, homeowners, and event organizers.

Our services may include:

• On-site accessibility assessments of buildings, outdoor spaces, programs, events, and services.

• Identification of accessibility barriers and opportunities for improvement using ADA accessibility standards and universal design principles.

• A detailed written report with practical recommendations tailored to your goals, priorities, and budget.

• Recommendations for accessible products, equipment, and design features, including resources on where to obtain them.

• Visual concept mock-ups to help illustrate recommended accessibility improvements.

• Guidance on accessible programming, customer service, policies, digital accessibility, websites, communications, and inclusive practices.

• Follow-up consultation to answer questions and help prioritize next steps.

Our goal is to provide practical, easy-to-understand recommendations that help organizations become more accessible and inclusive. While our guidance is based on ADA standards and accessibility best practices, architectural design, engineering, permitting, and construction should be completed by appropriately licensed professionals when required.

Accessibility Tip of the Month

When promoting an event, include accessibility information in your announcement from the beginning. Let people know about accessible parking, step-free entrances, accessible restrooms, seating options, service animal accommodations, captioning or ASL interpretation, and who to contact to request additional accommodations. Sharing this information upfront helps people plan with confidence and helps everyone feel welcome before they even arrive.

Support Disability Inclusion

If you’d like to support SAND’s mission, please consider making a financial contribution. Donations help us provide disability advocacy, accessibility education, community programs, and employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

You can also support SAND by donating your Oregon BottleDrop cans and bottles through our Blue Bag program. Every bottle and can helps us continue building more accessible and inclusive communities.

Thank you for helping make Corvallis and Oregon places where everyone can participate, contribute, and belong.

Happy ADA Day!
