PERMACULTURE UPDATE!

Good News Everyone,

I hope you folks had a chance to check out our rockin' new fence constructed a few weeks ago and the two spots that we inoculated with oyster and kings mushrooms. I'm very proud of everybody's effort and delighted with all our progress. KUDOS!

There is some more fun in the works at the garden as we near the end of the term.

Monday, NOV 16th @ 5:00pm
Living Fence planting workshop

- I'm not sure if folks know Billy Wood but he was a fellow SSI volunteer, OSU graduate and permaculture buddy who planted a native bed in the front of the SSC before he graduated last year. Recently the front of the SSC had to be altered for upcoming maintenance and Billy's native beds needed to be uprooted. Myself, Sarah and Shannon thought it would be an awesome idea to plant the front fence area with some of the plants that survived being potted and to build a new native bed with the fence. Additionally, the area is shaded, moist, and cool; a prime spot to plant many native plants. Shannon was awesome enough to go out on Sunday with a few folks and grab some plants to place in the front area as well. Thank you Shannon!

Long story short...
JOIN US THIS MONDAY FOR A NATIVE BED PLANTING!!!!

Monday, NOV 23rd @ 6:00pm
Pot Luck & Movie Night!

- To honor all our fun progresses with life, school, and the club there will be a movie and pot luck! Please bring some tasty grub to share as we pot luck it up, chat, and enjoy a movie.

Have a wonderful Monday everyone and stop by the club for a fun planting tomorrow!

LAND USE ACTION TEAM:  Inventory is First Step toward Creating Sustainable Neighborhoods

With the long-range goal of creating a more sustainable, compact city, the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s Land Use Action Team is coordinating with volunteers throughout Corvallis to conduct an inventory of neighborhoods to assess existing amenities, walkability, bikability and public transit opportunities.   The information from the inventory can be used to prioritize where to improve sidewalks, bike lanes, and multi-use paths for enhanced safety and connectivity, and where to add new amenities.  The CSC Land Use goals, strategies, and actions address local environmentally friendly food production, publicly accessible natural areas, sustainable vibrant neighborhoods, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and green building.  For details, see pages 28 – 30 of the Corvallis Sustainability Action Plan: http://www.sustainablecorvallis.org/SustainabilityActionPlanFinal12_15_0.pdf

If you want to help with the inventory, please email Susan...@oregonstate.edu.  To learn more, come to the next Land Use meeting on November 9th, 7 pm, at the south co-op’s main meeting room (the small building near the coffee stand).

Donate your old athletic shoes to the 2009 Congressional Reuse-A-Shoe Drive!

The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) and Oregon-based Nike have the annual Capitol Hill Reuse-A-Shoe Challenge. Led by Members of the Oregon House Delegation -
Rep. Peter DeFazio, Rep. Earl Blumenauer, Rep. Greg Walden, Rep. Kurt Schrader and Rep. David Wu - the month-long drive will run from November 1 - 30.

The goal of the Congressional Reuse-A-Shoe drive is to collect as many worn-out athletic shoes (Nikes and other brands) as possible, which will then be recycled and turned into donated sports and play surfaces around the world. The winner will be announced in December, and the office that collects the most pairs of shoes will receive a donation in the Member's name to a nonprofit/school organization of his or her choice to help get kids more physically active.

If the 4th Congressional District can gather the most shoes, we can earn a donation to the
Boys and Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley in Roseburg

You can bring your shoes to a bin at the SSC!
