Does anyone know where I could recycle unwearable,
threadbare clothing? I hate to just throw it away.

Thanks.

Long answer to a short question:

Vina Moses on Garfield Ave. between 9th St.and Highland/10th St. accepts
donations of clothing and household goods for redistribution to low-income
Corvallis citizens. Qualified folks are allowed to fill two grocery sacks
full of items from their free store once per month. Now for your question:

It is NOT Vina Moses' policy to accept clothing FOR recycling, but I do know
for certain that any clothing and other textiles they receive that are
stained, torn, threadbare, or out of season are placed into plastic sacks in
their sorting area and tossed into a trailer in their small parking lot
(dirty items are tossed into the trash). This trailer is picked up at least
monthly and taken to St. Vincent DePaul of Lane County.

St.Vincent then sorts through all the bags again for possible reuse of any
items for *resale*, and the remainder is then torn up and made into batting
(stuffing), strips to use for piano cleaning, etc. St. Vinnies recently
received a fat grant to purchase a "ripper" to more effectively tear up
these textiles.

Encouraging our fellow Corvallis citizens to reuse their textiles for
household rags themselves is a good option. Additional reuse en mass would
probably mean arranging for additional trailers staged somewhere else in
Corvallis for collecting more of these items and getting them to St.
Vincent, who pays for the removal and transportation to Eugene. I actually
spoke with St Vinnies this summer about the possibility, and they are
definitely interested. Finding a staging location is the issue. I spoke
with ARC who seemed interested, but again, limited space.

If anyone in our coalition would like to work on this, I'd be happy to help.

I found out to my delight that The ARC of Benton County will accept
rags. I discovered I'd stashed away several bagsful, just waiting to
find a place to accept them!
