Greetings everyone,
The sustainability coalition’s Transportation Action Team is organizing a community science project and we need your help. We want to start keeping track of the percentage of trips around town by different transportation modes: motor vehicle, walking, biking, rolling, and taking the bus. This is known as transportation mode share.
Shifting mode share from motor vehicle trips to active transportation and transit trips is an important goal of the City of Corvallis and the sustainability community. The shift will reduce carbon pollution, improve community health and safety, free up space for more affordable housing, and allow our city to grow while improving quality of life. Despite the importance of this metric, it is not being tracked in our city.
To track transportation mode share, we will conduct modal counts of individual trips at selected sites throughout Corvallis - and we need Trip Counters! A Trip Counter will monitor an assigned street location or intersection for one (or more!) 2-hour period (7-9am & 4-6pm, October 6-9) and tally individual trips by the mode of transportation.
Here’s the plan:
- October 1-5: Training, distribution of supplies, and site assignment. Training will occur through email and zoom (if needed).
- October 6-9: Modal trip counts will be conducted Monday through Thursday during peak travel times: 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.
Interested in being a Trip Counter? Then this is the info I need from you:
Please respond only to me (stevenst...@gmail.com) with this information by September 28. Also, please feel free to recruit other Trip Counters by forwarding this email and inviting them to join our community project.
I hope to hear from you soon!
Thank you! Steve
