Wanted: Hosts for 2025 Edible Garden Tour

Deadline to apply is May 31st

Do you have a garden that feeds people or pollinators – or both? If you would like your garden to be featured on this summer's Edible Garden tour, please complete this form by May 31, 2025:  https://forms.gle/8KcZxLwgMxR989CM8

Please encourage your green-thumbed neighbors to fill out the form, as well! The more responses we receive that are within walking and biking distance of each other, the more likely they are to be featured on the tour.

This will be the 11th annual Edible Garden Tour, brought to you by the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s Food Action Team. We're looking for some friendly folks who are eager to talk about their gardens, and we hope you will help. We want to feature the fruits, veggies, herbs, and pollinator plants that thrive in Corvallis, plus the creative ways home gardeners grow their food sustainably. Every garden and gardener has their challenges: How have you worked to overcome yours?

Two Upcoming Water Action Team Presentations

Mark your calendar for 5/27 and 5/28

The Sustainability Coalition’s Water Action Team has produced two NEW presentations that will be featured next week!

“Revealing the Lost Creeks of Corvallis” is being offered on Tuesday, May 27, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm through the Academy for Lifelong Learning. This is a live/Zoom hybrid presentation that will reveal details about the location and impacts of the lost creeks of Corvallis. Presented by Water Action Team leader Dave Eckert, this program will also show attendees how to explore them.

Sequoia, Dixon, Oak, Dunawi and Ryan Creeks, as well as the Mill Race, all have tributaries that have vanished through development since 1921. Many houses, businesses, churches and institutions are built over these creeks that still flow under the surface, with consequences.

Those who attend in person at the Corvallis Community Center (C3) are encouraged to arrive early, since seating is limited to 30. The webinar is limited to 90, so join by 1:20 pm at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83796541186?pwd=1aTO2qi9t0TCaZ1iFtdgYNfZ2Ka2jH.1

“The 4 Magical Downtown Willamette River Parks of Corvallis” is the third and final webinar in the 2025 Liz and Bob Frenkel series, to be shown on Wednesday, May 28, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. This presentation is designed to help attendees better enjoy four parks along the Willamette River by learning some of the history, site ecology, and current user opportunities near downtown Corvallis.

Co-hosted by Water Action Team leader Dave Eckert and Rebecca Landis, President of PreservationWorks and Founder/Manager of the Corvallis Farmers’ Market, this program will feature Sawala Point Park, Riverfront Commemorative Park, North Riverfront Park and Orleans Natural Area. Even if you’ve been to all of these sites, you’re sure to learn something new that will help you better appreciate them.

To pre-register for this free and open to the public webinar and receive the Zoom link, click on cbcpl.net/Frenkel3. Everyone who pre-registers will receive a link for the webinar and will also receive a link to the recording three days following the live webinar. Co-sponsors of this special presentation include the Marys Peak Group of the Sierra Club, Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, and the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s Water Action Team

“Green Apple Award” Meets Fundraising Goal

Award to celebrate sustainability in education

Last fall, the Sustainability Coalition’s Education Action adopted a new project that builds on the sustainability work of the Corvallis School District (CSD) during the past 14 years, which included the following:

·    2011 - Adoption of a Sustainability Policy

·    2018 - Adoption of a Sustainability Management Plan

·    2019 – Hiring of a Sustainability Specialist

·    2024 – Adoption of a goal to the Sustainability Management Plan to integrate sustainability Literacy curriculum at each grade level by 2025

·    2024 – Adoption of a School Board goal requiring the superintendent to report progress to them on meeting sustainability goals as part of his performance evaluation

To highlight these commitments and to recognize CSD staff for their individual contributions to sustainability education, team member John Swanson conceived of a “Green Apple Award”, inspired by the Corvallis Public Schools Foundation’s annual Golden Apple Award that recognizes exceptional CSD staff. After John gained support for his idea from the Foundation and the Sustainability Coalition, he and his wife, Jeanne Holmes, set about to raise $20,000. – the amount needed to fund the annual award in perpetuity.

To entice potential donors to contribute to the Green Apple Award fundraiser, Education Action Team member John Swanson promised a home-baked apple pie to those who made a gift of $1,000 or more to the fund.

Thanks to a $5,000 anonymous matching grant, donations from individual community members, and substantial support from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Corvallis, the $20,000 goal has been reached! The Corvallis Public Schools Foundation has created an endowed fund, The Corvallis Green Fund, to enable the award to be funded into the future. The first Green Apple Award will be presented in 2026.

Congratulations to John and Jeanne for their successful fundraising efforts – and thank you to all who supported this new award!

Please forward this “E-UPDATE” to members of your participating organization and to other interested individuals.
