Corvallis Wilderness Expedition

Monday—Chip Ross Park: This will be our home base for the first day. Take Highland St. up toward Crescent Valley. Turn left at Lester Ave, and there will be a sign for Chip Ross Park. Note: Pick-up location is different from drop-off. We will end our day at Chepenafa Park. Take 29th St past Walnut Blvd. Follow past Timberhill Athletic club and take a right on Daylily. The park is visible on right.
This park begins our journey past wetland environments to open meadow, then into mixed deciduous forest and on to upland oak meadow. We will have lunch at the top of Chip Ross overlooking Corvallis. This day will serve as an overview to the many ecosystems and various habitats found in Corvallis. Theme: Biomes and Ecosystems.
Tuesday--Bald Hill Park: We will begin at the Midge Cramer Path located right after the Benton County fair grounds on NW 53rd St.
This park will let us explore the large oak meadow and its ecosystems. We will study Native American use of fire and its importance in creating oak ecosystems. Time will be spent up close with large oak trees. Home base will be a large barn with full cover in the center North end of the park. We will pay close attention to avoid the poison oak, but wear pants. Theme: Oak ecosystem and the Local Kalapuya Tribe.
Wednesday:--PV Arboretum: We will meet by the pond just under the main lodge as you enter. Take Hwy 99 north past Mountain View Road to Arboretum road. The road is to your left and opens to include a left turn lane. (If you miss this road and need a different entrance, drive past blueberry meadow on 99 and you can hit the far end of Arboretum road.) A wooden sign marks the entrance--upon entering, stay to the right and follow around to park under the lodge by pond. Theme: Douglas Fir forest and modern forest practices (Bike Day).
Thursday--E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area: We will take a tour of the wetlands with a wildlife biologist and learn about some of the threatened species that are protected in the area. Theme: Wetland Ecosystems. We will meet at the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area Headquarters. Travel 10 miles north of Corvallis on Hwy. 99W. Turn right on Camp Adair Road. Less than ½ mile in on Camp Adair Rd, turn left at the wooden sign for Headquarters.
Friday--Crystal Lake / Willamette Park: Bring your bike and helmet. This is a fun and easy place for kids to bike. We will begin by taking a look at a park wetland near the river and follow the trail to Willamette Park for lunch and fun. In the afternoon we will visit spots along the Willamette River, learning about the importance of this amazing river. Theme: Riparian Ecosystems and flood plains. We will begin at Crystal Lake park. Just outside downtown on HWY 99 south take a left onto Crystal Lake Rd. Take the first left after bridge and after South Co-op. Follow road to a wooden sign and take left into Crystal Lake Sports Park. --
