Greetings everyone,
Corvallis Farmer's Market (CAFM) starts up their Winter Indoor Market this coming Saturday (Jan. 10, 9am-1pm) at the Benton County Fairgrounds. CAFM requested two bike racks for the duration of the market (Jan-April) and the TAT will transport the racks to the fairgrounds and leave them until the weekly market ends in April. They'll be set up near the south entrance. Tell your friends who bike or roll that there will now be convenient bike parking at this market!

(If you use these racks, please let me know if you think two suffices or more are needed.)

Also, CAFM is trying to figure out a way to get public transit to service the fairgrounds on Saturdays during market hours. The closest Corvallis Transit System bus is Route 8. Currentl, it turns off of 53rd at SW West Hills Rd, does a loop around Grand Oaks Dr., and then heads back to the Downtown Transit Center (DTC). Route 8 does the loop every two hours. We are wondering if there is time within this two-hour loop to add a 10-minute spur out the fairgrounds during the Winter Indoor Market hours. This would be the Route 8 start times from the DTC at 8am, 10am, and 12pm.

This brings me to the REQUEST: Ride Route 8 for its entire loop and record the DTC departure time, the time at each stop, how many people get on and off at each stop, and the DTC return time.

Ideally, we would get one person for each Route 8 loop starting at 8am, 10am, and 12pm for this Saturday, but data on one loop at these start times any day of the week would be great. If you are willing and able to volunteer for a loop, please respond to all and let us know the time and date.

I tried to ride a full loop on a CTS bus with a client to see Christmas lights.  The driver told us that you are not allowed to ride a full loop.
You must have a destination along the route.
I am willing to try a Saturday ride on route 8 and can walk home if they make me get off before the bus returns downtown.

Is that because they don't want homeless people riding around on the bus all day? What's the thinking behind that rule? Personally I'd want to ride a full loop on a route just so I was comfortable in my mind where it went and how long it took to get to any particular point on the route.

Greetings again,
I've heard back from a few people about the CTS request. Based on two things I was told, I'm going to postpone this request. First, I quoted the info about Route 8 from the CTS website that needs to be updated - the Route 8 loop runs hourly (not every two hours as the website states). It is still worth timing the route, but we are less likely to find 10 minutes to add a spur and stay on the hourly schedule. Second, there is a CTS rule against riding for an entire loop and we could get kicked off the bus.

We'll talk with CTS about permission to ride the loop and prospects about a pilot study adding a spur Route 8 to the Winter Market at the fairgrounds, then get back to you.

Thanks, Steve

If you get two people to time it: start a timer on their phones together. One person gets on the bus at the transit center and rides to a stop at grand oaks, the next person gets on at grant oaks and rides back to the transit center. The first can take a bike/car from the second person at the grand oaks stop back and meet at the transit center.
