Raingardens are a beneficial use of land that counterbalances the over-abundance of impervious surfaces in cities.
Raingardens are an excellent way to add beauty and interest to your landscape AND at the same time, do some good for the people and animals who live downstream.
A raingarden collects rainwater that runs off your roof, driveway, sidewalk, etc. Raingardens can mimic natural forests, meadows, or streams and thus slow stormwater runoff and capture sediment and pollutants.
Raingardens keep our community healthy by:
-
reducing flooding and stream erosion downstream by absorbing rainwater from hard surfaces
-
filtering oil, pesticides, fertilizers, and sediments before they can pollute streams
-
recharging groundwater by allowing water to soak into the ground
-
providing wildlife habitat
