Karen,
Thanks again for connecting with me. I’ve been sharing this idea around, and there is a lot of positive support. So yes, let’s go for it. If you can put together this advisory board, that would be awesome.
I obviously should warn you that we have a couple of challenges that will partly constrain us. One is the existing arrangements, where some contracts are already signed and we are dealing with whatever comes with that in Florence. The other is the budget, which is very tight given the location. So a lot of what we need to do is to try to be smart within that.
That’s the bad news.
The good news though is I think there are a lot of possibilities. And I’ve copied Janee. I think she will be our key contact for this. She represents the company that is handling our logistics and so is the right person to ask questions of, to offer many suggestions to, etc. She is also very supportive of this. A think a good next step once your committee is formed is for the 3 of us to think through how best to advise. Another would be to think through the experience at CHI, and think about the things that potentially could be greener.
Then another thing for the team to brainstorm would be other ways to try to bring a more sustainable perspective to the conference. That could range from including advise on alternatives within the program, website, stuffed in the bag, etc., to highlighting things that we were able to influence with an icon or whatever, to being assertive in stimulating submissions under the sustainable theme through the existing program venues.
Sound like a start?
ARNIE
P.S., What SUN location? I was in Colorado and worked with the SUN folks there, and of course have many friends in CA (e.g., Eric Bergman, former folks like Jakob N., etc.). And when were you at Interval?

Subject: green advisory board
Hi Arnie,
I met you after the closing plenary at CHI. I am the one that talked to you about making CHI green next year. It was great to meet you and I am so glad that you are supportive of this idea. I just wanted to let you know that I am starting to put together an advisory board. I will keep you updated. In the meantime, please let me know if there is anything else I can do to.
Since we haven't met before, here's a little background info about me. I have been working as an interface designer for about 10 years throughout the Bay Area. I've worked at Interval Research, various startups during the dotcom bubble, Sun Microsystems, and am now at a small engineering and design consultancy in San Jose called Vinq. I've also designed a visualization technology called STRETCH. It is allows for large amounts of hierarchical data to be viewed and navigated. If you are curious, it can be viewed at www.elastictech.com <http://www.elastictech.com> .
Thanks,
Karen
