Offers a flower  Sacred Water: Spiritual Gardens with Dr. Delin Lai

Wednesday, October 7,  6:00 pm

The Crane House, 1244 South Third Street
Admission to the discussion is free, but we recommend contacting the Crane House to reserve seats.

Join University of Louisville Art History Professor Delin Lai as he discusses the connection between sacred water and Chinese and Japanese gardens.  Confucius said, "The wise find pleasure in water, the virtuous find pleasure in hills."  Laozi said, "The highest virtue is like water, which benefits all the creatures in the universe, yet claims nothing for itself, and which is content with the places that all men disdain."
Dr. Lai's lecture will introduce how these notions were embodied in Chinese and Japanese gardens.

The lecture will be followed by a dinner of Asian cuisine at the Crane House.  Dinner is $15 per person and space is limited.  Call the Crane House at 502-635-2240 to make reservations or e-mail bsla...@cranehouse.orgCo-Sponsored by the Crane House, the Asia Institute, and the Center for Interfaith Relations

Water is an important symbol in Burmese Buddhism representing both the cycle of birth and death and the means to transcend it.  River waters were critical to the rise of Burma's several Buddhist dynasties, a fact expressed in the country's colorful national mythology.  Given this, it is not surprising that water should play a major role in Burmese religious and secular ceremonies.  In this talk, Dr. Pranke will discuss the significance of water in Burmese legend and folklore, its use in rites and ritual, and finally its celebration in the boisterous national water festival, "Thingyan," which is partly Buddhist and partly secular, that ushers in the Burmese New Year.

Patrick Pranke is an assistant professor of religious studies at the University of Louisville where he teaches world religions and Asian religions with a focus on Theravada Buddhism and Burma. He has conducted research and worked in Burma and northern India, and is affiliated with the Buddhist academy, Thitagu Kaba Buddha Takkathol, in Sagaing, Burma, where he has served as an instructor and translator.  His research interests include Burmese monastic history and historiography, sangha-state relations, Buddhist scholasticism, and Burmese popular religion.
