1) FUND EDUCATION NOT WAR

Mass meeting
Arts A1 Lecture Theatre, University of Sussex
6pm Thursday 28th October

Last week the government announced massive cuts to funding for
universities as part of its spending review. They say there is no
money for education, while billions of pounds is spent on a war in
Afghanistan which the majority of the British people oppose.

The government is telling universities they must find funding from
other sources. To do that universities are gradually transforming the
kind of education they provide. Education for the benefit of society
is being replaced with whatever will attract funding from the likes of
big corporations and the military.

In the latest example of this transformation, university management
have controversially appointed Jamie Shea, a senior NATO advisor, as a
visiting lecturer in International Relations. NATO is responsible for
the Western military operations in Afghanistan, and despite the
current austerity NATO is campaigning for more military spending. The
No Shea at Sussex campaign is calling for Shea’s appointment to be
withdrawn.

Come to this meeting to hear from Sussex students and lecturers about
the links between education cuts and the increasing influence of the
military in our university, and find out how we can take back control
of our education.

FUND EDUCATION NOT WAR is hosted by Sussex Stop the Cuts and No Shea at Sussex.

3) BRIGHTON MARCH AGAINST CUTS

Assemble at the Level, 12 noon, Saturday 30th October
Organised by Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition

Cuts are of course affecting all public services, not just our
universities, and we will have the best chance of stopping the cuts if
we work together with workers and service users from across the public
sector. This Saturday’s march in Brighton will be an important moment
for the Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition which is seeking to do just
that. Please come along to show your support for this exciting
initiative.
