So I've just had a meeting with Martin Gotfrit regarding SFU's new
programming objectives in regards to the Diversification Grant they
have received.
Basically SFU has been given 1 million dollars to spend on equipment
and facilities for the Contemporary arts with the purpose of
"training"... what does that mean? Well they have the opportunity and
are purchasing a whole wackload of new gear for the Contemporary arts
at Woodwards and are going to have "state of the art facilities". Good
thing we've all graduated right? But anyway, the reason I was meeting
with him was because they are interested in (or actually required to
according to their granting body) sharing their equipment and
facilities with organizations such as ourselves. The catch is they can
ONLY be used for the purposes of "training".
Ok so what does that mean for us? This is something we need to discuss
as a group. I asked him if it would be allowable for us to use this as
a revenue generating opportunity, to which he replied as far as he
knew that was fine. How we would go about doing that while keeping it
in the context of a training opportunity is up to us.
My immediate thoughts are if we put together a series of workshops and
charge people a fee (inviting the general public) we could use the
funds to purchase our own equipment which we could then use for
whatever we please. Or we could simply use it as a means of income for
the individual workshop coordinators.
I think we should have a meeting if anyone is interested in discussing
this or has any ideas of how we could use this to our advantage.
