Hello SFU film people,

First of all, let us congratulate all the 4th years for blowing everybody's minds with their batch of amazing films on Thursday night.  I think I speak for all the students, recent grads, profs, and innocent bystanders when I say that you exceeded all expectations and raised the bar to a whole new level this year.  You inspired a lot of people to quit twiddling their thumbs and go do something spectacular.  

On that note, we're all probably still riding that high of feeling that we're invincible and can accomplish anything.  But as you emerge from the soft and gooey womb of the SFU film trailers and enter into the cold, bitter, harshness of reality, that feeling will probably start to fade.  You will soon begin to realize that nobody is going to come looking for you and certainly nobody is going to just give you anything for free.  It may start to feel like the warmth, comfort, and camaraderie of film school is lost forever and you're cursed to live in a cesspool of cut-throats and philanderers.  

Well it doesn't have to be this way.  We can make a new reality!

Evan and I propose a meeting of the minds to discuss some real physical ways in which we can keep that collaborative feeling of film school alive.  We believe that if we pool our mental and material resources and move forward together as a collective, we can do exactly what we want to do, make whatever we want to make, and do it all on our own terms.  In this meeting we intend to take stock of who and what we have available to us in our film community in Vancouver.  The next step is to assess what we are lacking and figure out how to get it (like equipment, finances, and insurance, etc).  

And most exciting, we want to start exploring the possibility of finding a space to serve as our home base.  We're tired of working from our bedrooms.  

This is perhaps the one fundamental difference between film school and "reality" or whatever you want to call it, is that we no longer get to work together in the same space until the wee hours of the morning and show each other cuts and have conversations and argue with each other and all those beautiful things that made the SFU trailers so great.  Well, we believe that if we can get enough people together, we can solve this problem too and make an open, honest, affordable, fun and creative environment for filmmaking in Vancouver.
